The traders and merchants in Avowed are useful for more than just offloading all of your loot to collect an excess of coins. More often than not, they stock materials that are needed while you’re adventuring and are hard to find out in the wilderness.

Avowed: Which Difficulty Should You Pick?
You have five difficulties to choose from while playing Avowed, and here’s the best one for you.
Taking the time to regularly check in with the different traders will reward you well, especially if you’re looking to make yourself strong enough to face the Dreamscourge and the different terrors of the Living Lands. While you don’t need to buy everything that the traders have to offer, buying the best items will always place you in an advantageous position.

Upgrade Materials
A Hefty Stock Is A Good Stock
Sure, you could probably get away with just wandering around a foraging for your upgrade materials (you can find them in more than a few chests and lock boxes), but why would you only rely on foraging and pilfering?
You might find yourself running out of your upgrade materials sooner rather than later, every time you stop at camp to do some upgrading. You don’t need to buy a merchant’s entire stock of upgrade materials, but stocking up every now and then when you have the coin is a great way to ensure you’re always on top of your upgrades.
7
Enchanting Material
Better Than Farming Monsters
If you’re struggling to find monsters to farm while exploring the Living Lands or their item drop rate just isn’t that high, then you might as well toss some coin to your local traders. More than a few traders, including your apothecaries and your standard merchants, will carry enchanting materials.
Some of it is relatively rare and harder to get your hands on, while others are a bit more common. It might be a bit expensive, but it’s definitely worth it to pick up the enchanting materials that are harder to get your hands on because they come from less common enemies.

Fresh Water
An Exploration Boon
Fresh water gives you 25 percent to your movement speed, and it’s none-too-common, so you should probably pick it up at every opportunity you see it. Drinking it just before a fight can make you less likely to get hit, or if you have a long way to venture after entering a new area (like the Emerald Stair) can make exploring all the easier.

Avowed is a massive open-world game with many mechanics that you have to keep in mind if you want to have a smooth experience.
It’s not a necessary item, but it does improve the experience of traversing the Living Lands on foot, especially if you don’t care to use the fast travel at every available opportunity.

Health And Essence Potions
Stay Stocked Up And Alive
You can generally find more than your fair share of health and essence potions while wandering around the Living Lands, but if you’re particularly bad at combat, this is something you’ll want to invest your coin into.
Even if you don’t think you’re bad at combat or you have a lot of health, making sure you always have a healthy stock on hand is important. Eventually, you will find yourself in a pinch, facing off against some boss that you absolutely were not prepared to take on, and an overabundance of health potions will make or break your fight.
4
Better Quality Gear
Sometimes Buying Is Better Than Finding
You can find some items while you’re wandering out and about, but if you check in with the traders and blacksmiths regularly, you’ll likely find some higher-quality items up for grabs. They won’t come at a cheap price, and your adventuring will pay off if you sell some of your pilfered goods to afford higher-quality items.
Occasionally, you won’t just find a trader selling higher quality gear, like weapons and armor, but Unique items as well. Unique items are, generally, some of the best things that you can get your hands on.
3
Treasure Maps
Uncommon But Great
The chances of you coming across a treasure map at any of the traders you interact with are kind of rare. Treasure Maps, themselves, aren’t all too common, so you should take which ones you can when you can. They will either lead you to some great items that you can use, or some high-priced items that you can sell at a later date.
Worst case scenario, you can just hold onto them until you’re ready to go treasure hunting (or so, if you happen to run across the treasure while exploring, you can tick that off your ‘to do’ list without accidentally spending money on a useless map later).
2
Adra
Needed For Upgrading Unique Items
If you’re trying to farm Adra, then good luck to you, because it is a pain, and also you need to hunt down bounties and “mini-boss” monsters and NPCs. You might not think you need that much Adra while going about your explorations, but as soon as you try to upgrade your Unique items, you will quickly realize just how wrong you are.
As such, stocking up on Adra, no matter how expensive it may be, is important. You’ll thank yourself later if you go ahead and buy every merchant’s entire stock of Adra.
1
Lockpicks
Hard To Find On Your Own
Lockpicks are hard to find, which means that if you run across them in a merchant’s shop, you should absolutely drop everything to buy them. They’re relatively cheap, costing only 15 coins a piece, so you really don’t have an excuse to not pick them up at every opportunity.
You will need them when you least expect it, as you run across locked chests in the wild, some of which require multiple lockpicks to open up. As such, this is the best item – hands down – that you can purchase from any trader in the Living Lands.
