Magic: The Gathering has been leaning a lot further into video game collaborations, with popular sets like Fallout, and less popular sets like Assassin’s Creed, having been released as part of the Universes Beyond series over the past couple of years. Final Fantasy is the next big video game crossover coming to Magic: The Gathering, and Wizards of the Coast has given us a first look at the four Commander Decks that will be included.
First revealed by IGN, each of these Commander Decks will revolve around a particular Final Fantasy game, with Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14 chosen as the four that Wizards is going with. The commanders of each deck are, of course, the central protagonists of each game, with Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y’shtola all featuring. You can see the cards themselves down below.
Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy Commander Decks Have Been Revealed
Each of these sets will include 100 cards designed around each game, including reprints of existing cards with Final Fantasy art, as well as some brand-new cards to boot. Senior game designer Daniel Holt explained that the decision to have each deck themed around one game allowed the team to “dive deep into the lore of each, capturing even more beloved moments from across the game’s storyline.”
When asked exactly how Wizards of the Coast came to choose the games that would be included in the crossover (I’m slightly disappointed Final Fantasy 9 didn’t make the cut), Holt explained that Final Fantasy 7 and 14 were the clear picks due to their popularity, but that Final Fantasy 6 and 10 were chosen partially due to how many fans of those games were among the Wizards of the Coast team.

Who I’d Cast In The Magic: The Gathering Movie
Magic: The Gathering is headed to the big screen, and it needs a cast to match.
As for the commanders in each deck, there was apparently a lot of discussion as to who to choose. Cloud was a no-brainer for Final Fantasy 7, but Holt claims that there was a lot of discussion about the other three. Celes was considered for Final Fantasy 6, as the set revolves around the World of Ruin, of which she is the clear focus rather than Terra, while Yuna was also considered for Final Fantasy 10.
Y’shtola was chosen for Final Fantasy 14 specifically due to the character’s popularity and the fact that she’s a spellcaster, though ideas were floated around for a highly customizable Warrior of Light commander, but they had “pretty in-depth executions.”
All of these sets will be released on June 13 later this year, and given how popular the crossover is probably going to be, you might be best circling that date in your calendar three or four times. There will be other Final Fantasy-themed products released as well as these decks too, and I have my fingers crossed my boys Zidane and Vivi get their own spotlight.
