The long-anticipated Buffy The Vampire Slayer revival is nearly set in stone, and the franchise’s leading lady has come forward to express her feelings about the upcoming production at Hulu and give fans some clarification on the project.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer was one of the most impactful fantasy shows of the late 90s/early 2000s, taking the concept from franchise creator Josh Wheadon’s 1992 film of the same name and sticking closer to his original vision for the character, the show would be much more well received and run for seven seasons between its premiere and the tail end of 2002. Despite this stellar run, fans were sad to see the series go when it did come to an end, and they started a campaign to see it revived, which has been kept up ever since. This contingent of Buffy The Vampire Slayer fans would get some big news when it was revealed that Hulu was closing in on a revival for streaming with franchise headliner Sarah Michelle Gellar attached to return to her iconic eponymous role.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer isn’t complete without two main men. A revival must address their fates, whether through a return or a fitting conclusion.

Since the news broke, Gellar has been on hand to reassure fans concerning the Buffy The Vampire Slayer revival and offer updates on the limited changes that have popped up. More recently, she’s gotten candid about her feelings in light of the show finally making a comeback. In a recent interview with People concerning the upcoming revival at Hulu, Gellar explained that it wasn’t all sunshine and roses in the leadup to the revival show potentially starting production. “I wish there was a better word than overwhelming. It’s heartwarming and exciting and also incredibly nerve-wracking at the same time. It’s nerve-wracking,” she revealed, “because you have to do it right. And I think we have this team in place that is legendary, from Chloé Zhao to the Zucks [Nora and Lilla Zuckerman], to Gail Berman. And I think people are going to be pretty impressed.”

The article, which also quoted Gellar as stating on the record that fans “are going to be pretty impressed” by the revival, also outlined the creatives attached and their roles behind the scenes. Chloé Zhao is set to direct, while Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. All three women are also attached to executive produce alongside Gellar, Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui from the original series. Also attached to executive produce is Dolly Parton, who was a producer on the original show via her Sandollar Entertainment company but went uncredited. Parton has been on the shortlist to hop on a revival like this one. Gellar also confirmed to People that the Buffy The Vampire Slayer revival will be taking a page from Scream’s book by building up new stars. The show will be centering a new Slayer, while Gellar’s Buffy returns as a recurring character in the series.

While it had seven seasons and a lot of time has passed since the original show shuttered in 2002, there’s stiill a massive amount of potential for the new series to tap into. Thanks to the work that Wheadon signed off on at Dark Horse comics, there’s even a few comic arcs that the Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot could adapt to great success. For now, fans will have to wait for things to be finalized at Hulu, but can look forward to a speedy writing process thanks to all the workshopping that went into bringing the series back to begin with.
