Dexter: Original Sin season 1 came to a dramatic conclusion last week, as the serial killer with a code saved young Nicky’s life, and killed Aaron Spencer. Original Sin has been a huge hit for Paramount+ with Showtime, but it hasn’t been renewed for a sophomore season just yet. However, Patrick Gibson has revealed that he is very interested in reprising the role of Dexter Morgan.
Original Sin is the beginning of the big expansion of the Dexter-verse, with Michael C. Hall currently filming the sequel series, Resurrection, ahead of its premiere in summer 2025. It’s hard to see Original Sin not being renewed for a second season, especially after the first episode became the highest rated premiere in Showtime history with 2.1 million worldwide viewers in its opening three days.

Patrick Gibson took to the role of Dexter Morgan very well in the debut season of Original Sin, and many fans are keen to see him explore the serial killer’s origins in more depth in future seasons of the show. Paramount+ and Showtime are still weighing up the metrics before making a decision on season two, but Patrick Gibson has confirmed his interest in playing Dexter once again, in a recent interview with Yahoo! Entertainment:
I would love to. I had such a great time doing this and everybody involved is so incredible. I would feel so lucky to come back again.
Michael C. Hall is a tough act to follow, but Gibson nailed every little nuance of Dexter Morgan, while also making the character his own. Dexter is still in the early stages of both his killing and forensics career, but Original Sin‘s debut season definitely set up more to come in the early Dexter-verse.
Patrick Gibson Wants To See Dexter Hone His Killing Skills In Future Seasons And Hopes More Legacy Characters Turn Up
Original Sin‘s Dexter isn’t the neat monster he was in the original series, and his mistakes and tough learning curve using Harry’s code make the character just as compelling as ever. Patrick Gibson opened up in the same interview about what he wants to see if Original Sin is given the chance to expand Dexter-lore in future seasons:
This series feels like a pilot series. A lot of stuff is getting set up, and he’s learning from the very beginning of his first kill. So, I’m curious to see him start to become a bit more confident with his methods and take bigger swings. The stakes get higher and higher with this show, naturally. Also, some characters we haven’t got to meet yet from the original would be cool.
Original Sin sees Dexter toying with different methods of killing and disposing of his victims, but by the end of the final episode, it feels like he’s more refined, and set on his modus operandi. Gibson wants to see a bit more of the Dexter fans become accustomed to in the original hit series, and this will help bridge the gap between the two timelines. There are 15 years between the start of Original Sin and the parent series’ beginning, so it could be set to run for many more seasons. This will increase the chances of seeing more legacy characters turn up, with James Doakes being a popular choice with fans. Clyde Phillips had previously teased Doakes’ return, and while Gibson’s statement mentioned legacy characters in general, it’s likely he was referring to Doakes and, potentially, Tom Matthews as well.
