In every generation of pirates, there is one special crew that is always at the forefront of things, typically getting the most attention in the One Piece world. While these are undoubtedly the Straw Hats among the Worst Generation in the modern day, their historical counterparts were the infamous crew of Gol D. Roger, who attained the most fame and fortune on the planet by becoming the only crew to find the One Piece treasure.

Spearheading each of these crews is a certain structure special to only them, which fans have dubbed the ‘Monster Trio’. Although this term has always typically referred to the 3 main fighters of the Straw Hats, recent developments in the story have prompted many to refer to the similar structure of the Roger Pirates as such too. So, let’s break down both of the Monster Trios from One Piece and see why they were so strong.

The Straw Hats Monster Trio

The Strongest Straw Hats

The modern-day Monster Trio is the reason this term exists at all, since many characters within the series also refer to these 3 characters as being monsters. Currently, there is a bit of a divide within the fandom about the actual strongest crew members, since Jimbei currently has a higher bounty than Sanji, implying that his name has also been thrown in the mix here regarding the series’ strongest characters. However, as fans know it right now, the Monster Trio refers to Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji.

The captain of the Straw Hats is an incredibly unique individual known as Monkey D. Luffy. What started as a young man who was way in over his head and only had a straw hat to his name eventually became a living legend that currently sits as one of the 4 Emperors of the Sea. While his strange rubber powers were always fun to see, he used them in amazing ways that showed the true potential of what he was capable of, which all came together in his Gear 5 transformation which made him the mythical warrior of legend called Sun God Nika.

His first mate, Roronoa Zoro, has been present in the series since its earliest days and was the first person to officially be recruited into Luffy’s Straw Hat crew. Starting his career as a renowned bounty hunter who would hunt pirates, his ambition has always been to become the world’s strongest swordsman to be worthy of standing next to his captain, the future Pirate King, and to fulfill his promise to his childhood best friend. In all of his fights, Zoro typically battles the second-strongest person in the enemy crew after the captain himself, mirroring his relationship with Luffy and his role in the crew.

The final member of the Straw Hat Pirate Monster Trio is Vinsmoke Sanji, who originally started his journey as a cook and has retained this role in his new crew. However, he is the most powerful member after Luffy and Zoro (and perhaps Jimbei), and his actions have earned him the moniker of Luffy’s ‘left-wing’. This was similarly imparted to the legendary Scopper Gaban, and in Chapter 1139, it was revealed that these two are clear parallels. Though Sanji’s childhood was filled with tragedy as a Vinsmoke, he eventually found his new home with the Straw Hats and is widely considered the third-strongest member.

Just like the Straw Hats, there was one specific pirate crew that was at the forefront of piracy in their time. These were the legendary Roger Pirates, whom many consider to be the greatest crew in history due to being the only ones in 800 years to find the mythical One Piece treasure, unofficially crowning Roger as the only King of the Pirates in history and his crew as the ones who helped him to become so.

As the name suggests, the most notable member of this crew is the captain, Gol D. Roger, who formed the crew in the first place. Nothing is currently known about Roger’s backstory as it’s only implied that he was incredibly similar to Luffy and even had the same dream as him, which eventually led to him becoming the first person to uncover the true history of the world and find Joyboy’s legendary treasure. Upon doing so, he was crowned the King of the Pirates.

The whole journey of the Roger Pirates began when Roger himself came upon Silvers Rayleigh on a boat and asked him to join his crew. Over the following decades, Rayleigh became Roger’s right-hand man and first mate of the crew, acquiring a legend almost on par with Roger’s himself. Rayleigh became known as the ‘Dark King’ and one of the strongest characters in history, making him an incredibly revered figure who can equally match up to Admirals even in his old age.

In Chapter 1139 of the manga, it was recently revealed that Roger and Rayleigh had a third with them, an equally legendary figure known as Scopper Gaban. It’s stated that these 3 legends stood shoulder to shoulder with one another and that in strength, Gaban was equal to Rayleigh and, consequently, almost as close to Roger. Gaban has since then spent his retirement years on Elbaf but was one of the strongest characters in the world in his day. The structure of Roger’s crew is likely indicative of what the future will be like for the Monster Trio of today.
