Resident Evil 2 Remake gets all the love, and the 2023 version of RE4 is definitely a series highlight. But with talk of Resident Evil 9 starting to swell, as well as speculation about possible remakes for Code Veronica or Zero, there’s one seriously underappreciated RE game that deserves a reappraisal. Available for less than $7 when bought alongside other Capcom hits like Devil May Cry 5, Onimusha Warlords, and Street Fighter, forget what you’ve heard and drop all assumptions – Resident Evil 3 Remake is actually very good.
As a matter of fact, it’s better than the original game. The clock tower section is gone and Nemesis only appears at set points, instead of hunting you dynamically. Those are the two big black marks against Resident Evil 3 Remake, but look beyond those, and it’s got some excellent ideas and additions. The new police section sequence with Carlos is fantastic – it’s atmospheric, tense, and adds layers to the wonderfully rich story behind Raccoon City.
Likewise, Carlos’ mission to the hospital, is a much more frightening, bleaker setting than the clock tower. What the new version of RE3 represents is a different approach to videogame remakes. Typically a remake means adding more, more, more, a lot of ‘content’ that often doesn’t serve the pace. RE3 Remake is zippier and leaner than the original, a sharper, punchier horror game with a great soundtrack and a better sense of restraint.

If you haven’t tried it before, or want to replay it and need a fresh copy, RE3 Remake is available for super cheap when purchased alongside three other Capcom games in a new Fanatical bundle. You don’t have to get RE3 – it’s just my personal pick of the bunch. All you have to do is pick four games, and you get them all for a total of $24.99 / £24.99, or $6.25 / £6.25 each.
