An idle RPG with engaging management simulation elements

High Seas Hero is a battleship simulation RPG from Century Games PTE. LTD. In this game, you can engage in fierce naval battles, upgrade weapons with post-apocalyptic technology, assemble a crew consisting of the strongest survivors, manage resources, renovate and build cabins, forge your warship, and more. In this High Seas Hero review, I will share my impressions of this game based on the popular series and provide an honest opinion.

For this review, I played High Seas Hero on Motorola G32 (Android) racking up a total of 15 hours of playtime. This allowed me to fully explore and experience everything that the game has to offer, providing me with a solid foundation for a thorough analysis.

The gameplay is pretty straightforward, with few enjoyable elements

Starting with the review, let’s dive into the gameplay experience of High Seas Hero. The gameplay is not that enjoyable or feels underwhelming at least for the first few minutes. It is understandable since it’s an idle RPG, however, it closes the gap with the variety of weapons, heroes, expeditions, arenas, cabins, guilds, and more. If you can push through the first few minutes, you will gradually start to enjoy the experience.

The gameplay is quite straightforward, you must continuously forge your battleship with crucial components like weapons, prow, stern, side, sonar, fire control reader, engine, armor, repair, and fuel. They are very important for battling against both aerial and naval forces. The becomes more exciting as you progress, ascend your ship, and unlock new features.

The idle mechanics are well-implemented in some regards. Instead of manually tapping the Forge button repeatedly, you can activate the auto option, setting the quality of the items, and apply three filters, crit rate, combo rate, and more. One of the fun features is the ability to customize your battleships.

While unlocking other content and features takes time, the game becomes engaging and fun, once you gain access to the Cabin section. Here, you can unlock and upgrade various rooms, such as the Energy Hub, Fishing Cabin, Kitchen, and more, assigning crew members to improve the functionality of your ship and ensure the crew members’ survival in the cold conditions.

High Seas Hero has various content with a fun management simulation element

The game includes a substantial amount of content, including Expeditions where you can battle against pirate ships in the Pirate’s Lair or take on the Octopus-like monster in the Undersea Cavern, and more. The Cabin section makes the game more fun, where you will get a similar type of gameplay to Fallout: Shelter and The Elder Scrolls: Castles.

In the Cabin section, your main task is to renovate and unlock more cabins, as the persuasive cold itself poses a significant threat alongside enemy forces. To protect your crewmates, you must carefully manage resources to construct and upgrade cabins, ensuring survival in the harsh environment. Additionally, you will also need to decide whether to prioritize technological development or focus on sustaining your crew.

The game offers decent visuals but its audio design truly stands out

When I say decent, I don’t mean just average, what I mean is the visuals of the game are well crafted, with detailed battleship models, aircraft, monsters, and even the small crewmates designed nicely. While it doesn’t feature ultra-realistic or next-gen graphics, that level of detail isn’t even needed for an idle game.

However, what truly stands out is the audio design for this game. The opera-style soundtracks and intense situation type add an immersive, warlike atmosphere. Even the shooting effects and other sound cues are well-executed in my opinion. Kudos to the audio team for this. Moreover, both the audio and visuals perfectly fit the theme of the game, showing the effort put into crafting such an experience.

The Controls and UI are simple yet well-crafted and eye-catchy

When it comes to the controls and UI of the game, High Seas Hero keeps things simple, user-friendly, and easy to recognize or navigate, without unnecessary confusion. The UI is well-designed and complements the game’s aesthetics. While the user interface may look a bit cluttered at times, it doesn’t hamper your overall gameplay experience.

Navigating is pretty easy between the sections, settings, profile, and all other features. The icons and fonts align nicely with the game’s visual style, and they make it easy to navigate without having to waste your time. As for the controls, since it is an idle RPG, for most actions, you simply have to tap around, so it is not that complex.

IAPs are tempting, but you can still enjoy as a free-to-play player

High Seas Hero offers a variety of in-app purchasable items, especially the Weapons and Heroes Gacha, which may tempt you to spend your money to unlock them, to ultimately progress faster. The game includes items that you can purchase to have an upper hand, including Universal Speedups, Turbo Engines, and Coins.

Apart from them, there are various packs and offers, including Passes, Growth Packs, Starter Packs, Level Funds, Equipment Funds, Diamond Store, and more. While some of these purchases can help accelerate your progress, and Heroes and Weapons are crucial for the game, you can still obtain them without even spending a penny, which is pretty great.

If you can control your temptation, you can easily go the free-to-play route. Although you will need to invest a lot of your time like I am doing. The only thing you can buy is the Ad-Free Pass, apart from that I don’t find others that much needed.

Final Verdict

High Seas Hero is a simple idle RPG with engaging and fun management elements, mini-games, and various other content. While it may take some time to fully appreciate the game, it becomes more engaging as you keep progressing, unlocking new features and content.

You have to keep forging or upgrading your ship, carefully deciding on what to equip and what to sell, and managing the cabins, which is nice. The game also features guilds, arenas, expeditions, and more to keep you engaged. The soundtracks are great, and the game doesn’t hurt your pocket, unlike a few other titles. That being said, I recommend you give it a try, as your experience might differ from mine.
