Summary

  • Dreams are significant in the One Piece universe, with characters striving to achieve them despite conflicts.

  • Examples include Hatchan’s takoyaki stand, Hiriluk’s cure, Cricket proving a golden city, and Baby 5 finding love.

Dreams are of deep significance in the One Piece universe. Every member of the Straw Hat Pirates has at least one dream, and most major characters often have theirs examined with some depth. Due to the nature of the world, it is unfortunately true that multiple dreams will naturally come into conflict, and not everyone will see theirs fulfilled.

One Piece: The Justice Of Every Marine Admiral

Oda has confirmed each marine admiral has their own form of upheld justice. This list will look at each justice and how it informs their actions.

Oda has explicitly stated that Luffy lets his enemies survive as he views being unable to fulfill one’s dreams as a fate worse than death. Yet, alongside a slew of dreams that have yet to be accomplished, as well as those that will never be accomplished, there are a few who have made their dreams clear and also achieved them. These characters have all achieved at least one dream of theirs.

1

Hatchan

Dream: Open A Takoyaki Stand

  • Affiliation: Arlong Pirates (Formerly), Sun Pirates (Formerly)

Hatchan was a fish-man who was longtime friends with Arlong, having accompanied him for the majority of his known piracy career. He was a member of both the Arlong Pirates and the Sun Pirates, during Arlong’s affiliation with the latter crew. Despite his former captain’s human supremacist ideals, Hatchan had previously befriended humans such as Rayleigh and even befriended Arlong’s enemies, the Straw Hat Pirates.

Despite the dreams of both of his former captains spanning the world, whether worldwide fish-man domination or a level of greater acceptance between humans and fish-men, Hatchan had a much simpler dream before his time as a pirate. He and fellow crewmate, Kuroobi, once dreamed of opening a Takoyaki stand. Hatchan came into the possession of such a stand when he aided some catfish who specialized in carpentry. The catfish in question had their village destroyed by a sunken ship and struggled to rebuild due to starvation. Hatchan used looted treasure to purchase cooking materials, which he used to make takoyaki for the catfish. As thanks, they built his current base of operations, the Takoyaki 8, for him overnight. Hatchan has since seemed content to mostly work aboard the ship, and leave his piracy days in the past. That said, he seems willing to aid friends when they are in need.

2

Dr. Hiriluk

Dream: Cure the Frozen Hearts of Drum Kingdom

  • Affiliation: Sakura Kingdom

Hiriluk was an ex-thief diagnosed with a fatal illness. His vision of sakura (pink trees with cherry blossoms) is an experience that he credited with curing him of said illness. It left him with boundless optimism that turned him into a quack doctor. As Wapol snatched up most other doctors, he was one of two remaining, but his “cures” did little for his patients. He instead had hoped to cure their hearts, which the cowardly king, Wapol, had frozen with his selfishness.

Luffy has accepted help from former foes in the past, and these old enemies may become more examples of this occurrence.

Shortly before he died, Hiriluk discovered a powder he had cultivated with his experiments, which would color the snow like sakura, which was a success. Immediately before his death, he declared that his dream would live on, even if he did not. After his death, Hiriluk’s adopted son, Tony Tony Chopper, was taken in by Kureha and taught how to practice medicine. Kureha kept her friend’s powder. After Wapol’s defeat and ousting, Kureha shot the powder into the sky. It was a success and led to Dalton, Wapol’s ex-guard and the new ruler, rechristening the kingdom into the Sakura Kingdom, hoping to use the name to symbolize a rebirth. While pragmatism is needed to achieve any goal, it is the ability to maintain hope that helps such efforts be cultivated. Even though Hiriluk did not live to see his dream come true, his absolute confidence, even in death, remained a symbol that moved figures vital to the kingdom’s reconstruction.

3

Mont Blanc Cricket

Dream: Prove the Golden City’s Existence

  • Affiliation: Saruyama Alliance, Unnamed Pirate Crew (Formerly)

Mont Blanc Cricket was a descendant of Mont Blanc Noland, a man who alleged a city of gold on Jaya but was executed when it did not appear for the king. Despite his genuine heroic drive and effort, this one failure caused him instead to be memorialized as a liar in an infamous fable. Cricket was burdened with the stigma of Noland’s supposed lie. He took to the seas and was once a pirate captain, who believed he was destined to discover Jaya’s fabled city of gold. His crew abandoned him, yet Cricket remained there alone. With time, a pair of pirates named Masira and Shoujou joined Cricket, having been fans of Noland’s fable and true believers in the city of gold. They deputized themselves as Cricket’s sworn children, essentially becoming brothers to each other. This led to the formation of a group known as the Saruyama Alliance, an organization made up of the three pirates served by two crews, one captained by Masira, and another captained by Shoujou.

The group had some level of proof of the city’s existence, discovering gold objects in the area, yet the city itself was never in their grasp. Despite initial hostilities, the Saruyama Alliance eventually became friendly with the Straw Hats, who were trying to get to Sky Island, where the golden city was eventually found. With Luffy ringing the golden bell of Shandora, Cricket was relieved to discover the truth that had eluded him, and many others, for so long. Subsequently, Cricket was seen traveling with the brothers once more, in pursuit of a new dream.

4

Baby 5

Dream: Marriage

  • Affiliation: Straw Hat Grand Fleet, Donquixote Pirates (Formerly)

Baby 5 was once an unwanted child from the impoverished Kuen Village. She was viewed as a burden by the village and abandoned to the mountains by her mother, who deemed her useless, due to only being able to eat rather than work. This left her with a complex, effectively obligating her to do whatever was asked of her. She was granted a level of protection by the Donquixote Pirates, who accepted her after discovering that she was not useless, even at the young age of eight. Yet this alone had not cured her of this internal trauma. She had been continually taken advantage of by everyone, including several suitors, who she quickly accepted marriage proposals from. However, each one was killed by Donquixote Doflamingo, and their villages were ransacked as well. Although Doflamingo has a greater level of care towards crewmates than most pirates, one can argue his actions stem from a desire to keep Baby 5 firmly under his control, rather than merely protect her from the true intentions of her suitors. Baby 5 seemed to have a strong yearning for marriage, believing each proposal was true love, and needing to be talked down by her crewmates.

More facts about this mysterious group are steadily becoming known.

Baby 5’s eventual husband would come from the same team that took Doflamingo down. Sai, a member of the Happo Navy, threatened Baby 5 in several ways that she interpreted as flirting. Discovering her compulsive need for validation, Sai swore to wed her but was challenged by Lao G, one of Baby 5’s crewmates, who also wanted her under the crew’s control. After Sai defeated Lao G, he had to deal with Chinjao, his grandfather, and the navy’s don. Chinjao objected to the wedding, partly because Sai was engaged to marry Uholisia, the heiress to the Niho Navy, for political reasons. Yet after Sai bent his grandfather’s pointy head, he seemed to relent and give his grandson the title of don. Sai accepted Baby 5 as his fiancée, with the pair joining the Happo Navy’s power with an alliance known as the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, dedicated to serving Monkey D. Luffy.

One nasty engagement call-off later (made somewhat ironic by Uholisia being a bigamist), Sai and Baby 5 were wed. In addition to being a powerful crewmate, Baby 5’s cooking is Sai’s favorite. Although her talents were not readily apparent, it is abundantly clear that Baby 5 is far from useless.

A Handful Of Baroque Works Officer Agents

Dream: To Attain Their Dream Occupation

  • Affiliation: New Spiders Cafe, Baroque Works (Formerly)

Baroque Works was a criminal organization that sought to overthrow the current ruler of Alabasta and install Crocodile in his place, with the highest-ranked subordinates also being promised a portion of power for their efforts. Thanks to the efforts of Bentham (otherwise known as Mr. 2 Bon Clay), most of its members are currently released. When their escape was guaranteed, Marianne aka Miss Goldenweek executed a colors trap technique to transform each member present into what they dreamed of being. Marianne herself became an artist. An odd handful of their dreams related to the food service industry, with Babe (Mr. 4) becoming a pizza delivery man, Mikita (Miss Valentine) turning into a chocolatier and Zala (Miss Doublefinger) reprising her disguise as Paula, the owner of Spiders Cafe.

Other dreams include Drophy (Miss Merry Christmas) becoming a princess, Gem (Mr. 5) becoming a fireman, and Lassoo (Mr. 4’s dog-gun) becoming a tank. Even Crocodile and Daz Bonez (Mr.1) have their dreams uncovered. Bonez wants to be a superhero (likely a pun referring to his Supa Supa no Mi) and Crocodile wants to be King of the Pirates (which fits with his disillusionment toward dreams and piracy in the present day.) Bentham and Galdino (Mr. 3) are not present, so their dreams are currently unknown.

To achieve her dream, Zala re-opened Spiders Cafe in a new location, and all the agents who chose to escape initially are currently employed there. While certain dreams such as becoming a princess or a full-fledged fireman, don’t wholly correlate to the necessities of a restaurant, others like being a delivery man, artist, or chocolatier are surprisingly achievable. In their final cover story appearance, the Baroque Works members seem content with their lives in the cafe, with at least a few of them acting directly in line with their dreams.
