More recently, in December 2024, a report surfaced about the Xbox Series S supposedly saving a gamer’s life due to its toughness. The latest such incident involves a Switch player unexpectedly discovering their cartridges came out in one piece after a house fire.

On Reddit, user DemureSow posted pictures of their intact Switch game cartridges that survived a fire in the owner’s room caused by a short circuit that otherwise ravaged “most” of their belongings. They said that even though the boxes containing the games melted, “all” their cartridges were unscathed. One of the images they shared shows the melted Switch game cases that have evidently fused together and required prying open to retrieve the games inside. Another image shows the games including Megaman 11, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, three different Mario titles, and more, that were caught in the accident. In one of the replies, DemureSow revealed that not only did the games look fine, but “every single one of them” worked without issues.
Switch Fans React to Nintendo Game Cartridges Surviving the Fire
The viral Reddit post, which has garnered over 5,000 upvotes and numerous comments, evoked various reactions from other Switch enthusiasts. Amazed by the perceived sturdiness of the cases that managed to protect the physical Switch games inside, one top comment jokingly said that Nintendo should “start building homes” with the plastic it uses for the casing. Poking fun at the melted boxes, another comment said, “I didn’t look at the sub and thought you had made some kind of peanut butter sandwich.”
Although DemureSow’s cartridges made it safely out of a fire, Nintendo officially states that extreme temperatures could prove detrimental for the Switch and its cartridges, advising users to avoid such scenarios. Taking that into account, this incident seems to be even more incredible and fortunate.
Meanwhile, Nintendo is ramping up work on the Switch successor in the build-up to its release in 2025. While fans already got a glimpse at the highly awaited console in January, a recent leak gave players a better idea about the size of the physical games that will come out for the Switch 2 console.
