How Many Games Has Rockstar Developed?

Rockstar is one of the most highly regarded gaming developers. Part of the reason for its critical acclaim is that the studio seems to opt for quality over quantity. It doesn’t release games every year, so it has developed fewer titles than many other big developers, like Ubisoft and EA.

Even the GTA and Red Dead studio’s underrated games are still massive rockstar achievements!

Still, the company has been around for some time and is split into several different studios in different parts of the world. So, they have to make some games, and by now, the company has cultivated a decently sized catalog. Here is the exact number of games that Rockstar has developed so far.

Rockstar Has Made 30 Games

In total, Rockstar has developed 30 games. “Developed” is the keyword, as this doesn’t count titles the company has simply published. This means that the first two Grand Theft Auto games don’t count, as they were made by DMA Design before it was acquired by Take-Two and turned into Rockstar North.

Grand Theft Auto 3 was also developed by DMA Design, but when it was released on PC, it was ported by Rockstar North, so it still technically counts. On that note, every game that Rockstar has ported onto other systems or re-released, even if the company didn’t initially develop the game, has been counted.

Each game only counts once, so even if Rockstar ported a game on multiple systems, it only counts as one.

Expansions have not been included in the tally, meaning games like GTA’s London 1969 mission pack have not contributed to the number. Because of this, the first game that was counted is 2001’s Oni, which Rockstar ported to the PS2.

Speaking of years, most of the games came out in the 2000s. In fact, 22 of them did, while only eight were released in the 2010s, which shows how often Rockstar used to release games compared to now.

There Have Been 12 Grand Theft Auto Games

Rockstar is most known for the Grand Theft Auto games, of which there have been 12 entries. Rockstar has been involved with the series since the expansion packs of the first game. However, they were still being developed by DMA Design until the company became Rockstar North prior to the PC port of GTA 3.

This number only counts first releases, not collections or remasters. It also doesn’t include expansions, such as The Lost and Damned. Yet, GTA Online is counted separately from GTA 5.

Of the 12 games, seven of them are considered part of the main series. This includes the five numbered ones, as well as Vice City and San Andreas.

Two of the games were released exclusively on handheld consoles: Grand Theft Auto Advance and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, and the first two games were also released on handheld systems, but they also came out on home consoles.

The PC has had the most GTA games, as eight of the 12 games are playable on it. As for consoles, the PS2 has had the most.
