While Half-Life often steals the show and sits fondly in more players’ memories, let’s not forget that fellow sci-fi FPS series System Shock was just as brilliant and revolutionary. The original game recently got a full remake decades on from when it first opened the FPS genre up to levels of freedom previously unseen. System Shock 2 was equally excellent, and a remaster (rather than a full remake) has been in the works for a while now. Well, that wait may soon be coming to an end. While I sadly don’t have a release date to share with you right now, what I can say is that developer Nightdive will be revealing it next month during GDC.
That’s a pretty encouraging sign, if you ask me. Sure, it’s a date of a date. But it’s a good indicator that the System Shock 2 remaster is close to completion. And after well over five years of waiting since it was first announced, I’ll take what I can get at this stage. It’s uncommon for a developer or publisher to reveal a full release date if it’s not dropping within the next six months or so, and rarer still to announce one if it’s more than a year away. As a result, when Nightdive does reveal it at GDC, I fully expect it to be before the end of the calendar year. That’s just speculation for now, but there’s a method to my madness.
Nightdive has also revealed today that the System Shock 2 remaster has undergone a name change. Previously known as the Enhanced Edition of the FPS game, it is now titled System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. It certainly parades its prestige a little better, don’t you think?

Nightdive will announce the System Shock 2 remaster release date on Thursday, March 20 during GDC. More specifically, it’ll feature in the Future Games Show livestream, so tune into that if you want to see the reveal live.
