Summary

  • Sony is considering airing a PlayStation Showcase in summer 2025, claims a notable insider.
  • A PlayStation Showcase hasn’t been held since May 2023, but the livestream format may finally return this year.
  • The rumored 2025 PlayStation Showcase could feature gameplay reveals for Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei, and Saros, as well as updates on more highly-anticipated first-party games.

A credible insider has claimed that Sony is internally debating the prospect of holding a PlayStation Showcase this summer. The last PlayStation Showcase aired in May 2023, following which Sony has solely stuck to its State of Play livestream format.

Before the PS5’s launch in 2020, Sony debuted PlayStation Showcase as a bigger, more grandiose livestream format than State of Play, typically packed with more first-party game announcements. The very first PlayStation Showcase was held in June 2020 and unveiled the PS5 itself, as well as major first-party games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, the Demon’s Souls remake, etc. Sony subsequently held PlayStation Showcase presentations in September 2020, September 2021, and May 2023.

PlayStation’s February State of Play Leaves One Big Question Hanging

Sony showcased an exciting lineup of upcoming games at the recent State of Play, but the absence of rumored reveals is surprising.

The 2023 PlayStation Showcase didn’t resonate very well with a lot of fans due to its emphasis on live-service first-party games, which could be why Sony hasn’t aired one since then. However, the PlayStation Showcase format might make a return this year. Reputable industry insider Jeff Grubb alleged in a recent Game Mess podcast episode that Sony is weighing up the possibility of broadcasting a PlayStation Showcase in summer 2025. The choice is apparently between a regular State of Play and a PlayStation Showcase, but Sony considering the latter may be an exciting sign.

Sony Might Have a Lot to Show at the Rumored 2025 PlayStation Showcase

Grubb reckons that Sony could have some “fun announcements” lined up for this summer, which would also be an opportune time to start “bolstering expectations” for 2026. Several PlayStation first-party studios have been tight-lipped about what they’ve been working on, and enough time has passed for some of them to be able to start talking about their projects. Chief among these is Insomniac Games’ Wolverine, which was announced at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase by way of a CGI trailer. Three and a half years should be ample time to prepare a gameplay reveal and release window confirmation for Wolverine. Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei is due for a gameplay reveal as well, even more so since it’s slated for a 2025 launch.

Additionally, Sony could drop new details about first-party games like Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Santa Monica Studio’s brand-new IP, Guerrilla Games’ Horizon co-op game, Haven Studios’ Fairgames, etc. at the rumored 2025 PlayStation Showcase. Gameplay for Housemarque’s newly-revealed Saros might also be shown off at this event, as teased by director Gregory Louden at the recent February State of Play.
