Overwatch 2 is bringing loot boxes back in Season 15 – and players will have the chance to earn over 100 of them completely free through gameplay, events, Twitch Drops, and Discord programs during the update. While not every season of Overwatch 2 will give fans quite as many as Season 15, loot boxes are being designed to be a way of rewarding players for their time, rather than their money.
Recently, Overwatch 2 held a special Spotlight event that revealed some groundbreaking changes for the game, including the new Perks system, Stadium game mode, and Freya hero. However, one of the most exciting announcements for Overwatch 2 was the return of loot boxes, the cosmetic lottery unlock system from the original game that was retired in its sequel in favor of the cash shop.

Overwatch 2 Introducing a Game-Changing Perk System
Blizzard reveals a brand-new perk system for Overwatch 2 that should completely change the way people play the game.
Now, even more information about these returning favorites has come out – including that fans will be able to earn a lot of them for free in Season 15. Overwatch 2 content creator Emongg spoke to game director Aaron Keller during the Spotlight event about the return of loot boxes. “You can’t buy loot boxes,” he declared, “They’re not for sale. We’re just giving them to players.” Both the Free and Premium Battle Pass, weekly quests, and events will all reward loot boxes regularly, but Season 15 will also have special challenges, Twitch Drops, and Discord programs to earn even more. “Not every season will be this way,” Keller clarified, “but… it’s well over 100 free loot boxes if you’re playing the game in Season 15.”
How Do Loot Boxes Work in Overwatch 2?
The contents of these new loot boxes seem quite robust as well. Overwatch 2 shop content and old Overwatch 1 items can all be found within these new loot boxes, including some items that can no longer be purchased. Keller also confirmed that the new Loot boxes automatically reroll duplicate items and have bad luck protection: every box has a Rare or better item, with at least one Epic promised every five boxes, and a Legendary guaranteed every 20.
This new loot box system is much more player-friendly than before. Because they can only be obtained via gameplay and other initiatives, loot boxes are being designed to be a free-to-play system first – only a handful of extra loot boxes can be obtained with real money via the Premium Battle Pass in Overwatch 2, which can technically be purchased with Overwatch Coins earned from the free version.
