A character’s dream in One Piece is one of the most important aspects of their arc in the series. It seems, more often than not, almost every facet of One Piece revolves around the dreams and goals of the characters, as well as their drive to achieve them. For this reason, many characters, including most of the Straw Hats in One Piece, have a clearly stated goal and reason for becoming a pirate that they have shared at one point or another in the story.
However, one character who never had the chance to directly state his goal, despite being a part of the main pirate crew in One Piece, is Jinbe, the newest Straw Hat. Although Jinbe has plenty of motivations throughout the series that push him forward on his adventure as a Straw Hat, compared to every other crew member, his main goal is a bit more ambiguous. Still, by taking a look at some of Jinbe’s reasons for assisting Luffy, and his actions throughout the series, it may be possible to discern Jinbe’s dream in One Piece.

Jinbe’s Interesting History In One Piece
From Warlord To A Member Of The Straw Hats
Jinbe has an interesting history in the story of One Piece. Starting as a member of the Warlords of the Sea, after refusing to take part in the Paramount War, Jinbe was imprisoned in Impel Down, alongside Ace. There, being allies from the past, Ace made Jinbe promise to look out for his brother, Luffy. After Luffy frees him, from there and throughout the entire ending of pre-time skip, Jinbe becomes a fierce defender of Luffy and a wise voice of reason that helps ground the emotionally distraught pirate.

Later on, more of Jinbe’s history is revealed, detailing his time with the One Piece villain, Arlong, and Fisher Tiger in the Sun Pirates. While other members of the crew, mainly Arlong, and his followers, were looking for more violent solutions, Jinbe, on the other hand, was more willing to practice restraint, like Fisher Tiger had taught him. Additionally, after the Paramount War, Jinbe also formed an alliance with Big Mom to protect Fishman Island, though he would later leave when he officially joined Luffy’s crew.

Although his objective initially was to protect Luffy throughout One Piece’s Paramount War, this goal was a fairly short-term goal for the sake of his friend, Ace. It seems far more likely that Jinbe’s dream in One Piece revolves around the inherited will of his former friend and captain, Fisher Tiger. Being a character who seeks to prove the equality of Fishman and humans through action, Jinbe seems to live by Fisher Tiger’s messages the most. Practicing nonlethal, but still incredibly active means, like joining the Warlords, Jinbe seems to do anything, to help Fishman and human relations.

From here, it’s easy to figure out that Jinbe’s goal in One Piece is to create a world where humans and Fishmen can coexist peacefully. During Jinbe’s explanation of the story of Fisher Tiger and the Sun Pirates, Jinbe reveals that on Fisher Tiger’s deathbed, the legendary pirate, despite hating humans himself, imparted the important idea of following Queen Otohime’s message of peace, rather than continuing the cycle of violence. From here, future generations, such as the one containing One Piece characters like Koala, will start to accept the Fishmen as equals.

In the end, although Jinbe’s dream has never been stated directly, like the other goals of the Straw Hats in One Piece, it isn’t too hard to interpret his goal in the series. Inheriting the will of his former friend and captain, Jinbe wishes for peaceful coexistence between humans and Fishmen. Although this goal may be incredibly hard to accomplish, knowing Luffy and the Straw Hat crew, it seems like great strides will be made regarding Jinbe’s goal before the end of One Piece.
