Summary

  • Marvel Rivals has been a smash-hit, holding on to its player base better than other games in its genre.
  • That said, while many players are hopeful of a PvE mode, NetEase Games has no plans to implement one.
  • The team has pondered it, but rather than a dedicated PvE mode, there could be a “lighter” mode down the line.

If you were one of the many hoping that NetEase Games, the developer behind the smash-hit live-service hero shooter Marvel Rivals, would be announcing a PvE mode anytime soon, then think again. It’s not coming anytime soon.

In an interview with IGN, Marvel Rivals producer Weicong Wu stated that there are no plans for a PvE mode, though things could change down the line.

“For now we don’t have any kind of a PvE plan, but our development team is continuously experimenting with new game play modes. So if we found that a new specific game mode is entertaining enough, fun enough, we would of course bring it to our audience.”

That’s not to say it isn’t something the team hasn’t pondered, it’s just the PvE experience would be a “different experience” from what currently exists, according to executive producer Danny Koo.

Can this really be sustainable?

“Yeah, we believe there are some of our audience that would like the PvE mode,” Koo acknowledged. “But also, you can see that if we come up with a hardcore PvE experience, that will be totally a different distinctive experience from what we have right now.”

That said, the team is constantly tinkering, and a “lighter” mode could exist one day. “So our development team has been continuously experimenting with different approaches to achieve that goal, maybe a lighter mode, in a lighter sense of that, and to see what would work best for our game,” he concluded.

PvE Was Rumored At One Point

Rivals fans may recall that back in January, a leaker account reported that a “source” told them that they had experienced a PvE mode. Adding to that, another account shared that a PvE tag was found in the files, suggesting the mode’s existence.

For what it’s worth, in that same interview, Wu denied that the team is actively trolling dataminers. Rather, as part of the game development process, multiple concepts and prototypes are often implemented. As a result, “there could be some information left in the code, and it might mean that we have tried those directions, and they may appear or may not appear in our future plans.”

In other words, PvE could have been a concept and was left in the code, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it was ever a serious consideration. NetEase’s most recent comments seem to corroborate that notion.
