Marvel Rivals PvE isn’t happening right now, but don’t count it out just yet

The Marvel Rivals rumor mill is, at this point, almost impossible to navigate. Every time I check social media I’m bombarded with the apparent appearance of a new character in the game files, or talk of hidden modes that NetEase Games could be working on. It’s too much. That’s why I’ve cast it all aside, and you should too. This is especially true for recent scuttlebutt concerning an alleged PvE mode, as NetEase Games itself has put that talk to bed. Even so, the team hasn’t completely discounted the idea.

Limited-time, spinoff game modes aren’t new to Marvel Rivals. Jeff’s Winter Splash Festival was a hero shooter Splatoon, and Clash of Dancing Lions is essentially a twist on Rocket League. There’s no doubt in my mind, then, that NetEase Games has even more wacky events for the multiplayer game planned – but it looks like PvE isn’t one of them. Right now at least.

“For now we don’t have any kind of a PvE plan, but our development team is continuously experimenting with new game play modes,” Marvel Rivals producer Weicong Wu tells IGN in a new interview. “So if we found that a new specific game mode is entertaining enough, fun enough, we would of course bring it to our audience.”

“We believe there are some of our audience that would like the PvE mode. But also, you can see that if we come up with a hardcore PvE experience, that will be totally a different distinctive experience from what we have right now. So our development team has been continuously experimenting with different approaches to achieve that goal, maybe a lighter mode, in a lighter sense of that, and to see what would work best for our game.”

While a PvE mode would be fun, Marvel Rivals isn’t exactly designed for it. The roster of 35 Marvel Rivals characters (soon to be 37 with The Thing and The Human Torch) are built around 6v6 fights, and each fulfils a specific role in that. I’m not saying tanks, healers, and DPS heroes can’t be dropped into a PvE game mode, but I imagine it would require a lot of work.

NetEase Games hasn’t ruled out PvE entirely, however, so there’s always a chance we’ll be jumping into a co-op mode at some point in the future. In the meantime, we’ve now got even longer to earn the Season 1 Invisible Woman costume, if you’re yet to make it into Gold.
