You’ll need tools in Hades 2 if you’re going to unlock new weapons and cast incantations.

Bringing farming simulators to the Underworld, Melinoë must collect and grow seeds and other resources from these strange lands. Resources such as Wheat, Garlic, and Poppy can be grown in the Crossroads and used to empower Melinoë’s abilities in her mission to defeat Chronos. This guide explains how to gather and grow Wheat for her incantations.

Hades 2 is still in Early Access at the point of writing, so some information in this guide may change over time.

How To Get Wheat

Wheat must be grown in the Crossroads, using seeds found in the Fields and Mourning, and you have to plant them in the Soil Plots created by the Flourishing Soil incantation.

Finding And Collecting Wheat Seeds

Wheat seeds are located in the Fields of Mourning, and can be harvested using the Silver Spade. You can unlock the Silver Spade first by using one Moly in the Cauldron to cast the incantation Night’s Craftwork, which will first grant you the Silver Pick, then by unlocking the Silver Spade using ten Silver.

Silver is found in Erebus and mined with the Pick, and each instance harvests three Silver, so it should be a quick upgrade.

By the time you reach the Fields of Mourning, it’s likely that you’ll already have most of the Gathering Tools, if not all, and maybe even some upgrades for good measure. You need the Spade to be able to interact with the Digging Spots where seeds are hiding.

Equipping the Silver Spade will increase your chances of finding Digging Spots, and the incantation Reagent Sensing will alert you to the presence of any Digging Spots, Outcroppings, Lost Shades, Fishing Points, and gatherable resources.

Hecate’s hound familiar, Hecuba, the last of the familiars Melinoë can recruit, will also replace the Spade if you bring her along, digging up seeds herself. Giving Hecuba Witch’s Delight can upgrade her abilities, one of which will also increase the chance of Digging Spots appearing.

Bravery of Familiar Spirits, which requires Wheat, is the incantation you’ll need in order to get abilities like Hecuba’s Earth Bond.

Using Soil Plots

The Flourishing Soil incantation will bring two Soil Plots to the Crossroads, required for growing the seeds Melinoë collects on her missions. The incantation becomes available after collecting at least six Moly, and costs one Moly at the Cauldron to cast.

You can gain two additional Soil Plots with the Rich Soil incantation, costing three Lotus that you can collect in Oceanus, and another two with Verdant Soil, costing one Garlic and one Wheat. Both of those must be grown in the Soil Plots.

Each seed has a different Growing Time. The time units here are measured in Location, or room, or are determined by other events such as going to the Hot Springs or Fishing Docks with companions. Wheat takes 13 time units to grow.

Wheat is a reagent that can be used for a number of incantations in the Cauldron.

With Bones of Burnished Bronze, you need to collect a large number of Ashes, Psyche, Bones, and Nectar over multiple runs, Gaia’s Secrets requires you to first have all of the Gathering Tools unlocked.

With Wheat only becoming available after reaching the Fields of Mourning, many of its uses will take some time to become apparent, having prerequisites or other difficult-to-collect materials involved.
