Hades 2: Complete Gardening Guide

Here’s everything you need to know about seeds and gardening in Hades 2.

Collecting seeds from the depths of the Underworld and heights of Olympus is a very important task, as Melinoë will use these resources to improve her weapons and magic, unlock new abilities and tools, and lend her aid to her allies. This guide will show you where to find Poppy Seeds and how to grow them into the Poppy necessary for a number of quests.

Hades 2 is still in Early Access at the point of writing, so some information in this guide may change over time.

How To Get Poppy

Poppy is grown in the Soil Plots in the Crossroads, using Poppy Seeds gathered from Tartarus.

The Digging Spots are random, but you can increase your chances of finding them by equipping the Silver Spade, or bringing along Hecate’s on-loan hound familiar, Hecuba. An upgraded Hecuba can increase your chances of finding Digging Spots, and she replaces the Silver Spade for Melinoë, digging up seeds for you.

How To Find Poppy Seeds

Poppy can only be found in Tartarus, the last of the Underworld’s regions. It requires the Silver Spade in order to collect Poppy Seeds from Digging Spots. The Silver Spade is one of the Gathering Tools that becomes available after using the Night’s Craftwork incantation, and the Spade specifically is unlocked using ten Silver, which is easily gathered from Erebus using the Silver Pick.

Equipping the Silver Spade will increase the chances of Digging Spots spawning, and the Reagent Sensing incantation, cast using one Moly after gathering at least five Silver, will alert Melinoë to any resources she can gather.

The familiar Hecuba can replace the Silver Spade, digging up Seeds on her own, and gifting her the Witch’s Delight crafted in the Cauldron allows you to upgrade her abilities. One of these abilities, Earth Bond, increases the chance of Digging Spots appearing.

If you’ve recruited the familiars Frinos, Toula, and Raki, then Hecate’s hound, Hecuba, will become available to recruit as a familiar — on loan from Hecate, for the purpose of aiding Melinoë in her mission.

Once Melinoë has collected Poppy Seeds, she can plant them in the Crossroads.

How To Grow Poppy

Growing Poppy Seeds requires Soil Plots, which are first gained through the Flourishing Soil incantation. This incantation becomes available after collecting at least six Moly, and costs one Moly in the Cauldron to cast. It will create two Soil Plots at the Crossroads, between Odysseus’ station and the Training Grounds, where you can grow the seeds you find during Melinoë’s missions.

You can create two more Soil Plots with the Rich Soil incantation, which becomes available after first growing one Nightshade and one Cattail, and costs three Lotus. Lotus and Cattail Seeds are found in Oceanus, and Nightshade Seeds are found in Erebus.

The last two Soil Plots come from the Verdant Soil incantation, becoming available simply by having Rich Soil but costing one Garlic and one Wheat, both of which must be grown using seeds found in Ephyra and the Fields of Mourning, respectively.

The time it takes for seeds to grow depends on the seeds — Poppy takes 21 time units. These units are measured in Locations, or rooms, that Melinoë travels through.

Time can also pass through other events, such as visiting the Hot Springs or Fishing Docks.

Summoning of Personal Insights only becomes available after completing a couple of other incantations, the Summoning of Mercantile Fortune and Rite of Social Solidarity, and defeating Chronos at least once.

Luckily, since you need to pass through Tartarus anyway to reach Chronos, you probably were able to pick up some Poppy Seeds on the way.
