For encounters like the Happy Man at the fork in the road, what may seem like a friendly interaction can easily turn into a sticky situation. During this random encounter, the man will invite you to celebrate the birth of his first son with a drink of his finest brandy. But is the brandy worth it?

How To Find The Cheerful Man

Some encounters will start naturally as you travel around the map, while others will only pop up while you fast-travel. Many of the encounters you’ll have fast-traveling can be found manually, but there’s no guarantee you’ll get them.

The Cheerful Man or Happy Man will show up on the side of the road as you are fast-traveling around Rocktower Pond. He’ll flag you down as you near the ‘Rocktower Camp’ at the three-way crossroads.

He’ll wave you over and ask if you’ll celebrate a momentous occasion with him. He claims he has just had his first son and that he doesn’t want to toast his new baby alone.

You’ll have two dialogue options when you meet the Happy Man:

  • ‘Congratulations!’
  • ‘What does this have to do with me?’

If you congratulate him, he’ll invite you to share a toast of special brandy with him.

After Henry asks the man what his son’s name is, the man hesitates for a moment before saying his boy’s name is Jonty. This is the first sign that the man is lying.

If you ask him ‘What does this have to do with me?’ he’ll apologize for bothering you and ask you to celebrate with him anyway.

If he offers you a drink, you can respond with:

  • (Toast)
  • ‘I’m not in the mood right now.’
  • ‘What kind of brandy is this?’

If you ask him about the brandy, he’ll say it’s a special brew that’s been buried for ten years. If you choose ‘I’m not in the mood right now,’ he’ll continue trying to convince you to drink the brandy.

At that point, you can either relent and let him pour you a drink, tell him ‘I couldn’t care less about your son,’ or say that you ‘don’t drink with strangers.’

If you refuse him with either of these options, he’ll tell you he feels insulted, then start to brawl with you. If you get too close to knocking him out, he’ll stab you and run away. You can try to catch him and knock him out to rob him.

Odds are you won’t have your weapon drawn when he fights you, but try to avoid killing him as that will still count as a crime if you’re caught.

If you rob him, you can loot the following items:

  • 8.7 Groschen
  • Weak Lullaby potion
  • Cheese
  • Hose jointed
  • Firm boots
  • Tunic
  • Ordinary coat
  • Miner’s hood
  • Miner’s hat

The only things of real value you can take from him are his Groschen and the Lullaby potion.

If you choose to toast with the Happy Man at any point in the conversation, the brandy will put you to sleep for two hours. When you wake up, the man will be gone and you’ll lose some Groschen. The brandy was laced with the Weak Lullaby potion you can find in his inventory.

You can avoid being robbed either by refusing to drink the brandy or by robbing the man of the Lullaby potion while he isn’t paying attention.
