Okami 2 game director Hideki Kamiya shared a few details about Capcom’s upcoming title. Kamiya confirmed that Okami 2 will be a direct sequel to the first Okami game and that the title is developed on Capcom’s RE Engine, which has been used for other titles such as Street Fighter 6 and Monster Hunter Wilds.

Okami 2 caught the world by surprise when it was revealed during the climax of The Game Awards in December 2024. In the first Okami game, players controlled the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu, who took the form of a white wolf to fight back against dark demons that plagued the land. For most of her journey, Amaterasu is joined by the diminutive artist Issun, who provided guidance and some comic relief. With her Divine Instruments and Brush Techniques that can call upon various elements like wind, water, and nature, Okami is widely considered one of the best titles to use drawing as a game mechanic.

Over two months since the surprise reveal of Okami 2, Capcom discussed a few more details about the game. In an IGN interview, Kamiya was joined by Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata. The group confirmed that Okami 2 will be a direct sequel to the first Okami title. Although Okami already had a follow-up game in 2012’s Okamiden for the DS, the ending of Okami saw both Amaterasu and Waka board a vessel for the Celestial Plain following the defeat of the dark deity called Yami.

  • Okami 2 will be developed on Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine.
  • The RE Engine is used for other current games, like Street Fighter 6 and Monster Hunter Wilds.

In short, the ending of Okami left plenty of potential for a sequel, despite Okamiden taking place some years afterward. Hirabayashi stated that, despite Okamiden‘s mixed reception, the company is aware of fans who enjoyed the game. However, Kamiya and Hirabayashi confirmed that the highly-anticipated sequel is still in very early development, which means fans will have to wait a while before Capcom can share more information about what to expect in Okami 2.

Additionally, the group stated that Okami 2 would be made using Capcom’s patented RE Engine. First used with 2017’s Resident Revel 7: Biohazard, RE Engine has since been used for other titles like Devil May Cry 5, Street Fighter 6, and the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds. The RE Engine’s successor, Codename REX, will be rolled out in segments. Additionally, some features will be integrated into the current RE Engine.

As one of the most beloved games that Kamiya directed, Okami‘s story and sumi-e ink graphics are fondly remembered by gamers. Only time will tell when Capcom will offer more information about Okami 2.
