Avowed: Every Class

Avowed: Every Class

Obsidian’s fantasy action RPG Avowed offers a lot of variety in how players can approach combat and builds. Though the number of classes in Avowed is relatively limited, there’s a lot of depth to each of the three class ability trees and how players can build into them.

All Playable Races in Avowed

In Avowed, playable races are not too different from one another, in terms of gameplay – but there aren’t many options for races in Avowed.

In Avowed, classes are sorted into three distinct ability trees containing skills for a Fighter, Ranger, or Wizard playstyle. Though you can specialize in one of these three Avowed class trees, it’s also easy to multiclass in Avowed to create a build that mixes and matches abilities from all three class ability trees.

Fighter

The Fighter Ability Tree focuses on “overwhelming combat force” with abilities that work well for close-range, martial playstyles. By specializing as a Fighter, Avowed players will gain access to a variety of melee weapon abilities, abilities that improve Stamina and movement, and abilities that improve your Block.

Best Fighter Class Starting Background

If you want to be a Fighter, choose the “War Hero” background in character creation. This improves your Might and Resolve to 3, important stats for raw damage and Stamina management.

Avowed: How To Freeze Water

Using a grimoire to freeze water in Avowed will allow players to jump on the ice and reach previously inaccessible areas.

Ranger

The Ranger ability tree focuses on “agility and finesse” with abilities that work well for mid-to-long-range attacks as well as fast melee playstyles. As opposed to the stanch but hard-hitting Fighter class, Avowed players will find the Ranger more agile, with a faster playstyle that rewards players who like to dip in and out of melee range.

It’s also possible to spec entirely into this tree and play a Ranged-only build that avoids melee combat entirely. Try picking up a Bow and an Arbalest for a mix of fast, light attacks and slow, heavy shots.

Best Ranger Class Starting Background

If you want to be a Ranger, choose the “Vanguard Scout” background in character creation. This improves your Perception to 3 and raises both Constitution and Dexterity to 2 – however, you will not start with a Bow.

Wizard

The Wizard ability tree focuses entirely on spellcasting with a huge variety of offensive spells, defensive buffs, elemental effects, and ways to improve your mastery over the arcane with Wand and Grimoire upgrades.

Every Grimoire in Avowed grants a selection of spells that you can cast while it’s equipped. But if you pick up a spell in the Wizard ability tree, you will be able to cast it without its associated Grimoire equipped. If you cast the Grimoire version of a spell you’ve learned, it will be cast at one level higher than normal.

Grimoire Mastery

To advance through the Wizard tree and get more spells, you will need to add Ranks to the Grimoire Mastery passive. At each level bracket, you will gain access to a few spells and effects, but the right-side of the ability tree at each rank will be locked until you increase Grimoire Mastery.

Additionally, you will not be able to use higher-level Grimoires if you don’t increase this stat.

Best Wizard Class Starting Background

If you want to play as a Wizard, choose the “Court Sorcerer” background in character creation. This increases your Perception and Intellect to 3, both important stats for spellcasters to improve damage and effective range for spells. You will not start with a Grimoire or Wand, but find one relatively soon in the tutorial area.

Multiclassing In Avowed

meet-kai-avowed-companion-overview-game-rant-advance-thumb

Because of the way Avowed classes work, it’s easy to multiclass. Avowed class ability trees aren’t exclusive, and your choice of background won’t affect what skills you can pick up from each tree.

Though you can really push a pure melee, ranged, or magic build by exclusively speccing into one of these three Class trees, multiclassing in Avowed is beneficial for a few reasons:

  • Pure Wizards tend to be very squishy if enemies like to stay close or you can’t fire off some defensive spells. But if you multiclass into the Fighter ability tree for more Heavy Armor penalty reduction, you’ll be able to equip significantly more defensive gear without as many stat penalties.
  • A pure Ranger can benefit greatly from a few powerful ranged Crowd Control spells, while a pure Fighter can benefit from buffs and AoE damage only possible with Wizard abilities.
  • Some unique builds only really work if you split up ability points between trees, like a Spellblade that uses a mix of Fighter and Wizard skills.

There are no requirements to multiclass aside from your level (and Grimoire Mastery for higher-level spells in the Wizard Tree), so go wild! If you spec too far in one direction and want to change things up, or a multiclass build isn’t working out the way you intended, you can always spend some Gold to re-spec each ability tree.
