Summary
- Hazelight Studios’ Josef Fares thinks more studios should take risks with co-op games.
- He particularly points out Ubisoft as a company that has suffered by playing it safe.
- He suggests they make a co-op Splinter Cell, and we think that’s a great idea.
Ubisoft’s public image has taken quite a beating recently. While there are plenty of reasons for this, including layoffs, NFT games, some high profile failures, and shelving a sleeper hit from last year, a lot of it is down to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. While pre-orders for the game are “solid”, certain people aren’t happy with Yasuke’s mere presence.

Split Fiction Hands-On Preview: The It Takes Two Follow Up Of Your Dreams
Split Fiction builds on It Takes Two in some seriously impressive ways.
While the company will be hoping that the game itself revives the company’s fortunes, after the failures of Star Wars Outlaws and, to a certain extent, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Hazelight Studios’ Joref Fares wants the company to take bigger risks than simply churning out more open world games.
Splinter Fiction
Fares’s Hazelight Studios has hit a goldmine, with A Way Out being a hit, It Takes Two winning GOTY at The Game Awards 2021, and Split Fiction looking to be a strong contender for this year. When asked about the success behind the co-op formula, Fares said that he’s surprised that more developers aren’t embracing it.
“Other publishers aren’t doing this, and it’s crazy to me,” he said in a conversation with GamesRadar. “So many people are playing these games, and people love them. I mean, I’m looking at Ubisoft, and they’re struggling now, and I hope someone [from there] listens to this interview, but why aren’t they taking Sam Fisher and doing a split-screen-only game?”
“Don’t chicken out to do single-player; just say this is split-screen only,” he continued. “Boom, that’s it. You have success, and I can guarantee you that they will sell a huge amount of copies of that. Yeah, they don’t even have to do it the Hazelight way; why don’t they listen to this [interview] and be like, ‘Oh, he’s right.’ That’s a guaranteed success for them; it’s for you, Ubisoft. You can get it for free from me.”
Fans of the Splinter Cell series have been begging Ubisoft to reignite the series. There have been talks about a Splinter Cell remake, but we haven’t heard much about it since October last year. The only other news we’ve got about the series is Sam Fisher coming to Fortnite.
A co-op Splinter Cell does sound like a great idea. Orchestrating stealth kills where one player distracts an opponent and the other one takes them down sounds like fun! Hopefully, someone from Ubisoft is listening to Fares.
