A remaster of 2019’s atmospheric detective game The Sinking City has been rated in Taiwan. The Sinking City received mixed reviews when it was released in the summer of 2019. While its gloomy Lovecraftian horror atmosphere was the star of the show, the game’s third-person Resident Evil-style combat left much to be desired. The Sinking City largely flew under the radar until almost a year ago when The Sinking City 2 was revealed at an Xbox Partner Preview showcase.

Several months after The Sinking City was first released, developer Frogwares and publisher Nacon, known as Bigben Interactive at the time, entered a legal dispute over the IP ownership and distribution of the game. This long battle endured through 2020 and 2021, leading to The Sinking City being temporarily delisted off Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Finally, early last year, Frogwares became the sole publisher of The Sinking City, gaining back full distribution control of the original game just in time to reveal the sequel shortly thereafter.

Now, it seems Frogwares may be preparing to release a remastered version of The Sinking City. On Twitter, Gematsu reports that The Sinking City Remastered has recently been rated in Taiwan for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. The description notes that the remaster is bringing the game into Unreal Engine 5 from UE4. Strangely, the “Launch date” provided in the document is today, February 14, 2025. It seems highly unlikely that the remaster is set to release sometime today, so this launch date is a bit of a head-scratcher; perhaps it refers to the publication of the document itself.

A Remaster of The Sinking City Has Been Rated in Taiwan

While six years is an adequate amount of time for a remaster to be released, The Sinking City did receive current-gen enhancements for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in 2021, making a remaster of the game seem unnecessary. With that said, an Unreal Engine 5 remaster of The Sinking City could be a move by Frogwares to drum up interest in the game ahead of The Sinking City 2, which has been stamped with a 2025 release window. Simply pointing to the 2021 console enhancements of the game won’t turn as many heads as a full-blown remaster. This would also make sense considering how little fanfare the original game garnered in 2019. A new remaster would surely boost interest in the franchise heading into the sequel.

If this Sinking City remaster is indeed real, it will more than likely be out before The Sinking City 2 hits some time this year. As for when fans might be able to expect the sequel, 2025 is already super packed with huge releases, so it’s hard to find a spot on the calendar where The Sinking City 2 could thrive. Fans may be able to expect to hear more about the game at Summer Game Fest in June. As for the remaster, fans should keep a close watch on Frogwares’ social media for a concrete announcement.
