The Switch 2 will be the first time since the Nintendo 64 that a Nintendo console won’t have a new Super Mario game with Charles Martinet voicing the title character. The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to launch within the next six months. Nintendo has revealed what its next-generation home console/handheld hybrid looks like, while also confirming some unique new functionality for its Joy-Con controllers. It’s also announced that a new Mario Kart game is in the works, with fans able to tune in to a Switch 2 Direct on April 2 for more details.
While one hasn’t been announced yet, it’s assumed that Nintendo will release a new 3D Super Mario game for the Switch 2. After all, every major Nintendo console since the Nintendo 64 has been home to a new 3D Super Mario game, and so it would make no sense for the Switch 2 to be an exception to the rule. There have been plenty of rumors about what the 3D Super Mario game on the Switch 2 will entail, but one thing we know about it for sure is that it will be the first entry in the 3D Super Mario line that does not have Charles Martinet voicing the title character.

In turn, this means that the Switch 2 will be the first Nintendo console since the N64 that doesn’t have a new Super Mario game with Charles Martinet voicing Mario. Nintendo made the decision to go with a different voice actor for Mario at the tail-end of the Switch 1 generation, with Kevin Afghani voicing Mario and Luigi in 2023’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder. It’s unlikely that this decision will be reversed, meaning that the new 3D Super Mario game on the Switch 2 will almost certainly feature the talent of Kevin Afghani and not Charles Martinet, marking the end of an era for the franchise.
Switch 2 Won’t Have New Mario Games With Charles Martinet Voicing the Character
Many fans are still sad about Charles Martinet no longer voicing Mario, but there has been a great deal of praise for Afghani’s work. And while Martinet is unlikely to voice Mario in any new Super Mario Bros. games on the Switch 2, his voice will still be well-represented on the console. The Switch 2 is backward compatible with the Switch 1, and not only that, but the Switch Online service provides fans access to all kinds of retro games from past consoles, including many titles with Martinet’s voice. So, while the Switch 2 may not feature any new Super Mario games with Martinet’s voice, it will have plenty of older titles where Martinet voices Mario, Luigi, Wario, and various other characters.
As far as the new 3D Super Mario game for the Switch 2, rumors have been consistent that the game will be open world. The latest rumors have suggested that the game will be modeling itself after The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and will feature Brooklyn, New York as a primary location. Time will tell if there’s any truth to those claims, but maybe we’ll find out more during the Switch 2 Direct on April 2.
