- Reading guides could prevent similar mistakes, but blind play may lead to unexpected errors.
A Stardew Valley player has shared their frustration after discovering that they had missed the ability to upgrade their backpack for three years. The unfortunate mistake has undoubtedly made the game far more difficult than it needed to be for this Stardew Valley fan.
Item management in Stardew Valley can be a big deal, with players limited on how much they can carry around with them. While a farmer could potentially store thousands of items on their farm with enough storage chests, having to run back and forth to drop off and pick up items as needed can be extremely time-consuming in a game that limits how much play time is available per in-game day. Unfortunately, it seems that’s exactly what this fan went through.

One Stardew Valley fan tries their hand at cooking up a delicious Tropical Curry recipe from the beloved farming sim video game.
Stardew Valley player Traditional_Cook9126 shared their discovery of the backpack upgrade sold by Pierre three years too late. A screenshot shows them checking the bag in Pierre’s shop, with the game text offering an upgrade to 24 slots. In other words, this fan has been stuck with the base 12 slots since they started playing. It’s not only very little space to work with for carrying things, but because tools take up slots on the inventory bar, that would have left the player with even less space to work with. According to Traditional_Cook9126, they had believed that the game would eventually allow them to craft new carrying bags, similar to how the game’s storage chests are crafted, but of course, this never happened. Traditional_Cook9126 even managed to descend 120 floors in the caves, all without having additional storage space.
Stardew Valley Fans Cringe at Storage Mistake
For avid fans of the game, it’s likely very hard to imagine progressing through the title without more storage than just 12 slots. Several shared their sympathy with the fan, while others talked about similar mistakes that they or their friends had made while playing other games, overlooking key components of titles like V.A.T.S. in Fallout games or fast travel in Skyrim. Not noticing the backpack upgrade is arguably understandable, considering it’s not offered through the standard shop menu, nor does Pierre make any mention of it. There is a small bit of text pointing it out on the display, but this could be easily overlooked, considering the rest of the store largely can’t be interacted with in a meaningful way.
Stardew Valley players have shared the wisdom of reading up on the game by way of Stardew Valley guides or the wiki in order to prevent mistakes like these. Still, there’s also something to be said for going into a game completely blind, but it does come with the risk of making mistakes like this one.
