The central focus of Metal Gear lies in the mechs that share the franchise’s namesake. In the series, Metal Gear are bipedal tanks that are equipped with nuclear weapons. While the themes of the Metal Gear franchise differ from Cyberpunk 2077, the shared inclusion of high-powered tech serves as an interesting connection. Project Orion is bound to explore the established lore of the franchise further, and taking note of nuclear-powered mechs could serve as a perfect starting point for some of the sequel’s villains.

Militech’s biggest enemy and competitor is the Arasaka Corporation.

As Militech’s Influence Grows, the Danger Increases

Being a private military contractor, Militech makes its profits by pushing destruction. It’s a system that promotes violence and power at any cost, so it would only make sense for the corporation to have an interest in harnessing nuclear weaponry for itself. Militech is a fascinating point in Cyberpunk 2077‘s lore, and its horrifying power could be put on full display if Project Orion were to give its story a Metal Gear-inspired twist.

As the famous Lord Acton quote goes, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Militech is the perfect template to use in order to showcase these facets of Cyberpunk 2077‘s world. Night City sleeps, eats, and breathes power, and Militech choosing to manufacture an army of walking nuclear-powered tanks is not far outside the realm of possibility at all. There is already a mech featured in Cyberpunk 2077 that resembles a Metal Gear. The Minotaur is a bipedal mech that works via remote-control, and it could easily fit in the world of Metal Gear. If Militech were to upgrade The Minotaur to be nuclear-capable, then Project Orion would have a harrowing threat on its hands.

Project Orion is rumored to have a multiplayer mode, but this has yet to be confirmed by CD Projekt Red.

Project Orion May Be Years Away, But Details Will Hopefully Arrive in the Near Future

Now that Cyberpunk 2077 feels like the game it was intended to be at launch, the prospect of a sequel is incredibly exciting. The game’s tech-centric dystopia can feel downright nightmarish a lot of the time, and seeing how CD Projekt Red plans on diving deeper into that world is compelling to think about. Unfortunately, Project Orion is likely several years away at this point. The Witcher 4 is next on CD Projekt Red’s to-do list, but the developer hopefully offers a little bit of insight sometime soon.

It’s unclear if Project Orion will showcase its own version of a nuclear arm’s race, but it could be a really intriguing route to venture down. Militech may not have been the main corporation at the center of V’s journey, but it would be a great contender for the franchise’s next big antagonist.
