Path of Exile has just fully unveiled its Legacy of Phrecia event, and given that it’s a rather last-minute make-good with the community after saying that support for PoE would pause to focus on Path of Exile 2, I’m shocked at how stacked it is. Legacy of Phrecia puts Path of Exile’s 19 Ascendancy classes in the bin, and casually whips up 19 fresh ones to replace them. Oh, and it’s out next week.
Path of Exile 2, despite still being in early access, has been a resounding success so far for Grinding Gear Games. But spinning up a new action RPG, fixing launch bugs, taking on feedback from hundreds of thousands of players, and gradually shipping all the new content and features it needs on the road to 1.0 is very resource intensive. It has led to GGG admitting it had taken developers from the Path of Exile team to help ship and maintain PoE 2, leaving a void of support for the original game. To make it up to fans, the studio revealed that a new event would arrive that would totally transform PoE’s endgame.
That’s one hell of a tease, and while we’ve had a few breadcrumbs of info on what to expect, GGG has now fully revealed the Legacy of Phrecia event, and boy does it look good. We knew that new Ascendancy classes were coming, but we didn’t expect 19 of them – this replaces the entire existing roster. They are all totally new subclasses, and are born out of some of the craziest concepts GGG had come up with over the years that’d been previously placed in the ‘maybe’ pile. “This event manifests the wildest ideas of our design team into reality,” it says.
The new trailer for the event above showcases all 19 Ascendancy classes in action. But to be honest, from some of their names alone, they sound incredibly exciting. The Architect of Chaos. Oooh. The Surfacaster. Aaah. The Bog Shaman. Hell yeah. It’s also confirmed that you can switch classes during the event, so there’s plenty of opportunity to try multiple Ascendancies out. You can skill trees for all 19 subclasses here.

As GGG had already revealed, it’s not just the new Ascendancies that are transforming the endgame during this event. “The Atlas Passive Tree in this event (and this event only) has been replaced by a new system. As you progress through the endgame you’ll find Idols, which can be placed into a new tab on the Map Receptacle UI to modify your maps.”
It also reveals a new armor set that will be an event-exclusive reward. Each individual item in the set will be earned at level 20, 40, 60, and 80.
Finally, and most importantly, we’ve got a date for the event, and it’s right around the corner. The Path of Exile Legacy of Phrecia event will begin on Thursday, February 20 at 12pm PST / 3pm EST / 8pm GMT / 9pm CET. It concludes on Sunday, March 23, so you’ve got just over four weeks to enjoy it.
Have fun in this mega event. While you wait, check out some more amazing games like Diablo that ARPG fans will love. Alternatively, this list of the biggest upcoming PC games will let you know what’s approaching on the horizon.
