Original Sin begins with Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) being rushed to hospital in the present timeline, after he was shot in the chest. Dexter’s life flashes before his eyes as he fights for his life, and the events of the prequel begin with Laura Moser giving birth to Dexter. The timeline shifts to 1991, and Dexter (Patrick Gibson) is a pre-med student, and desperate to experience his first kill. When his adoptive father, Harry Morgan (Christian Slater) is taken ill, Dexter discovers his nurse is trying to kill him with an overdose of his heart medication, so he pops his killing cherry with her, but not everything goes to plan, and a fight ensues. He disposes of her body in the everglades, and moves onto the next targets for his kill table, while ensuring he follows Harry’s code.

As Dexter embarks on a spree of killings, he joins Miami Metro as a forensics intern, where he meets dirty-minded Vince Masuka (Alex Shimizu) and his new boss, Tanya Martin (Sarah Michelle Gellar). He also quickly learns that homicide detectives like Angel Batista (James Martinez) and Bobby Watt (Reno Wilson) prefer donuts to healthy snacks, and he quickly fits in while hiding his dark passenger from them. There are two big investigations for Dexter to sink his teeth into: a brutal serial killer case, which Harry Morgan and Maria LaGuerta (Christina Milian) take the lead on, and the kidnap and murder of a young boy called Jimmy Powell. Events spiral out of control when Miami Metro captain, Aaron Spencer’s son, Nicky, becomes a target for the kidnapper. Turns out, the serial killer is Dexter’s brother, Brian Moser, and the mystery kidnapper is actually Aaron Spencer, who is desperately trying to get back at his wife for breaking up the marriage. The 1970s flashbacks focus on the lead up to Laura Moser’s murder, as Harry Morgan tries to keep her and her young sons, Dexter and Brian, safe from the cartel.
