Summary

  • Megumi held tremendous potential with the Ten Shadows Technique.
  • Megumi’s story was cut short as a plot device for Yuji.
  • Megumi could have had a better ending with more independent development.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s manga concluded rather recently, and it is safe to say that the story, which generally ended well, left some fans disappointed. Nailing endings for any story is certainly not easy, and in Shonen stories, it is often considered extremely difficult for an author to come up with an ending that pleases everyone. Simply put, the author cannot please every single fan and there are bound to be fans of certain characters that end up being disappointed.

Nobara’s ending was very underwhelming. Her character had a lot more potential in JJK.

That said, there are certain characters that the fans hope the author nails, and usually, this includes the main characters of a story. In Jujutsu Kaisen, the main characters were none other than Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara. While all of them enjoyed phenomenal starts to their stories, not all got the perfect ending that they deserved, and certainly not Megumi Fushiguro.

Megumi Fushiguro’s Tremendous Potential

  • Megumi Held The Ten Shadows Technique
  • His Potential Rivaled Gojo

Megumi Fushiguro was always destined to be a phenomenal sorcerer in the story. In many ways, Megumi was supposed to be in competition with Yuji Itadori, pushing himself to new levels while competing with his friend. Initially, this idea worked wonders and fans saw Megumi Fushiguro do brilliantly, even in a series that was filled to the brim with overpowered characters. Gege treated him brilliantly, and more than that, fans knew that Megumi had it in him to reach the very top and surpass all those who came before him in the Zenin Clan. Megumi inherited the 10 Shadows Technique, and that in itself was a massive deal. This technique is so strong that it is considered to be rival to the Limitless of the Gojo Clan, which is quite a statement. All things considered, Megumi’s potential was enough to see him reach Gojo’s level eventually, and this was established quite early in the story. Fans would’ve absolutely loved to see this come true as the story continued, and it was one plot point that they would most certainly have loved to explore.

Initially, Megumi’s growth was great to witness. Fans saw him reach the next level of strength with each passing arc, and even his battle with his own mentality was quite phenomenal to watch. Megumi pushing himself beyond all limits and reaching high levels of power was absolutely sensational for the fans to witness, especially when he fought a finger bearer, and later down the line, took part in the Culling Game arc. His growth was handled extremely well for a significant portion of the story, but eventually, his downfall came all the same when the author decided to sacrifice him in a shocking manner.

In the Culling Game arc, Megumi Fushiguro was successfully taken over by Ryomen Sukuna, who switched vessels after his intricate planning, and ended up becoming even stronger than he was in Yuji’s body. This set the stage for the final segment of Jujutsu Kaisen, but it was also the point where Megumi lost all his growth.

How Megumi Was Cut Out Of The Story

  • Megumi Became Sukuna’s Vessel
  • A Plot Device To Make Yuji Grow Stronger

Megumi was one of the most beloved characters in Jujutsu Kaisen and for good reason. Fans considered him to be a rival to Yuji Itadori, and in many ways, it can also be said that Megumi had his own story going on. A character truly shines when they can stand independent of the protagonist. Regardless of whether there was Yuji or not, Megumi’s own story was good enough to continue, and that’s what made fans love him. Often, characters revolve around the protagonist and fail to have stories of their own. These characters are simply there to add depth to the protagonist, or to make their story richer, instead of having their own stories cut out for them. Megumi was most certainly one whose story was interesting right off the bat, but the Culling Game arc of the story certainly changed that forever.

Bring Forth The Deepest Shadows And Don’t Worry About The Exact Form For Now. Just Push It Forward From Your Cursed Energy. Here We Go! Domain Expansion!” — Megumi

Fans saw the Culling Game arc of Jujutsu Kaisen be tragic for Megumi. In an arc where he set out to save his sister, Megumi ended up becoming Sukuna’s pawn. As Sukuna took over his body, he couldn’t do much to fight back and when he killed his sister, lost all will to live. When he fought and killed Gojo, Megumi’s character got even worse, not just because he killed yet another one of his beloved, but also because at this point, there was nothing worth living for for him. Megumi’s goals and dreams didn’t matter to him at all. His aspirations were already insignificant enough at this point, and worse than that, he gave up.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Maki’s Ending, Explained

Maki had one of the better endings in Jujutsu Kaisen. Her and Yuta ended together.

As the battle in Shinjuku Showdown continued, Megumi Fushiguro went deeper into his slumber, allowing Sukuna to assert further control over this body. He even rejected a helping hand from Yuji, and had he accepted it, he would most certainly have ended the battle against Sukuna long ago. Unfortunately, he chose not to, and Yuji had to press even harder to save his life. The sad part was Megumi going from a brilliant character with his own aspirations, to a plot device whom Yuji needed to rescue from the clutches of the enemy at the end of the series.

Megumi’s Ending In Jujutsu Kaisen

Megumi Was Saved By Yuji Itadori

Now, it must be said that Megumi’s story premise was most definitely not bad. Even being taken over by Sukuna could’ve been a good idea. This could’ve helped Megumi grow both physically and mentally. But, in order for this plot point to actually be good, Megumi would have to actually be an independent character following the defeat of Ryomen Sukuna. He’d still have to follow his own dreams and have his own aspirations. Megumi would need to have a defined role that is independent of being second fiddle to Yuji. But, unfortunately, the story ended immediately after, and that is what the problem truly is. Had the story continued and given Megumi time to build himself up, realize his goals, and fulfill his potential, it would’ve made for a great ending.

Instead, fans simply got to see Yuji beating Sukuna, and Megumi, finally, aiding him slightly in doing so. As Sukuna was beaten by Yuji, Megumi was saved, and the following chapters gave fans a glimpse or two of Megumi. He was seen holding a funeral for Tsumiki, and that was about it. Megumi definitely needed more than what he got, and it is unfortunate that Gege didn’t give him more attention that he desperately needed. Hopefully, if JJK ever gets a one-shot or spin-off, Megumi gets the chance to build his character further.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s last chapter, JJK 271, was finally released on September 29, 2024. Fans can read the series on the Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump apps.
