There are a lot of weapons to find in Avowed, but even a gun that shoots lightning or a flaming sword will do much against enemies that are way beyond the player’s level. Threats are much stronger as you explore the Living Lands, and you’ll need to upgrade your gear if you want to stay competitive.

Upgrading weapons and armor is a simple process, and it’s also quite convenient. You don’t need to spend much money in Avowed if you want to improve your equipment, but doing so can be a little confusing, especially if you missed the game’s early tutorial messages.

Upgrading Equipment in Avowed

To upgrade your equipment, you first need to set up your party camp. You can do this by approaching an appropriate camping site, which is usually represented by a large Adra pillar jutting out of the ground. Not all large Adra crystals can be used as camp sites, but the ones that can will be marked on your map as soon as you discover them. You can fast travel to camp sites at any time while you’re exploring an open zone, and when exiting a camp site, you can choose to return to the place you originally left.

Once you’re in your camp, look for the small tent with an anvil. Interacting with this opens up the Upgrades menu, which will let you pick and choose which pieces of gear you want to improve. To upgrade your gear, you need raw materials, and you can get those by looting, buying from merchants, or dismantling unwanted equipment.

How to Enchant Gear

Avowed Enchantment menu

Next to the upgrades tent is an Enchantment station. This is reserved specifically for upgrading the perks of unique equipment. You’ll still need to upgrade your uniques via the regular upgrade station, but if you want their special perks to become stronger, the Enchantment station is where you need to go.

Enchanting a unique piece of gear is more taxing on resources, but it’s hard to argue with the results. If you manage to find a strong weapon, such as the Last Light of Day sword, we strongly recommend upgrading and enchanting it as soon as you can. This trivializes low-level enemies, and it’s enough to make you competent against enemies of two or three skull danger ratings.

You’ll have the option to pick either a direct upgrade to your unique gear piece’s main enchantment, or you can select a different one to make it behave differently. For example, the Last Light of Day can either be enchanted to restore more health per kill, or you can have it deal high Stun damage when you successfully parry an attack.
