Summary

  • Grand Theft Auto fans have wondered for a while now what’s going to happen to GTA Online when GTA 6 launches.
  • Take-Two’s CEO has suggested that it’ll stick around if there’s still some interest in it.
  • Considering the fact that GTA 6 is a current-gen exclusive, that seems very likely to be the case for some time.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick responded to a question about the future of GTA Online by saying that the company has “shown a willingness to support legacy titles”, suggesting it might stick around for the foreseeable future.

While I’m sure that most Grand Theft Auto fans are counting down the days for when they can leave Los Santos in the rear-view mirror and set their sights on Vice City, GTA Online does hold a lot of memories for many of us. With that in mind, the impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6 has raised some questions about what will happen to GTA 5’s online mode.

If games cost a hundred dollars, a whole lot of people won’t play games.

It’s widely assumed that GTA 6 will come with its own version of GTA Online that will act as the new and expanded base for the game, but that would likely mean the original GTA Online being left behind. That being said, the mode has such a big playerbase even a decade later that it seemed unlikely for it to suddenly shut down, leaving fans with a lot of questions.

Don’t Worry, GTA Online Will Probably Stick Around After GTA 6 Launches

GTA Online The Cayo Perico Heist

Well, it looks like you shouldn’t worry too much about GTA Online shutting down any time soon. IGN recently spoke to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick ahead of the company’s most recent financial report, where it asked him why players should invest time and money into GTA Online with GTA 6 on the distant horizon.

Zelnick had to speak theoretically since a successor to GTA Online hasn’t been confirmed just yet, but he replied by saying that the company supports properties and projects when players are still interested in them. To illustrate this, Zelnick pointed to NBA 2K Online, which released in China in 2012 and is still going now since it has players, despite NBA 2K Online 2 releasing in 2017.

So we’ve shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them. – Strauss Zelnick

While Zelnick is speaking theoretically and not outright confirming anything, it seems that he’s saying that GTA Online isn’t necessarily going to be sunset when GTA 6 releases as long as there’s still interest. Considering the fact that GTA 6 is a current-gen exclusive, that seems very likely to happen too, as not everyone will be able to get a PS5 or Xbox Series for its launch.
