Summary
- All the way back in 2017, Fortnite added a weapon called the Zapotron before removing it after 30 minutes.
- That weapon has been referenced to death since then and treated as a bit of an in-joke.
- It’s not a joke anymore, though, as the Zapotron has just been added back to Fortnite for a limited time.
Epic Games has added the fabled Zapotron back to Fortnite OG nearly eight years after it originally appeared in the game for literally 30 minutes.
Considering how long Fortnite has been going on for now, it should probably come as no surprise that there are some items, weapons, locations and skins that have an air of mystery to them. Whether that’s for a good reason like the beloved Tilted Towers or a bad one like the whole debacle surrounding Travis Scott’s collab, there’s a lot of buried Fortnite history.

There is nothing better than vocaloid and kaiju living together in harmony.
One of the absolute best examples of this is a mysterious Heavy Sniper called the Zapotron. All the way back in 2017 when Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode had just kicked off and was in its Pre-Season, the Zapotron was added to the game for no more than 30 minutes before being removed altogether.
The Zapotron Is Finally Back In Fortnite
Epic Games has made lots of references to the Zapotron over the years (including pretending to deny its existence), but it was removed from the game’s files back in Season 4, so many thought it was just going to be a long talked-about bit of Fortnite history. That isn’t the case anymore, though, as the weapon has made a return.
Yesterday, the official Fortnite Twitter account joked that the Zapotron would be added back into Fortnite if its post got one like. Of course, that happened within nanoseconds and Epic has lived up to its word by bringing the weapon into Fortnite OG. As of the time of writing, the Zapotron is now live in Fortnite and can finally be wielded by more than the handful of veterans who picked it up in 2017.
There are a few caveats, though. Not only is the Zapotron limited to just being in Fortnite OG, but it’s also only going to be around during this weekend before being vaulted once more. It’s not clear why that’s the case, but it’s still a nice nod to Fortnite’s past and a good chance for everyone to be able to check it out.
