A live-action Dungeons & Dragons series set in The Forgotten Realms is in the works at Netflix. Shawn Levy, who has worked and continues to work with Netflix on Stranger Things, is attached to the project, and a script for the show’s pilot episode has already been written.
News of the tabletop RPG’s TV adaptation comes from Deadline. The report claims translating the D&D experience into a television show has been the plan for a while, with the hope that this might be the beginning of a sprawling adapted Dungeons & Dragons universe. There were plans for the show to find a home on Paramount Plus, but a “strategy shift” for the platform meant those plans fell through in 2023.

Since then, Levy has become involved and a deal has been hammered out with Netflix. While it made sense for Hasbro to try and work something out with Paramount first since it was the studio responsible for 2023’s live-action D&D movie Honor Among Thieves, Netflix has previous with the TTRPG too.

The Show Will Take Place In The Forgotten Realms
The popularity of Stranger Things has, in turn, likely resulted in new fans flocking to D&D due to the penchant the show’s core characters have for the iconic game. It’s also evidence that Levy is a fan too, hence him being a part of the project now that Netflix is involved. As for the setting, The Forgotten Realms has been a part of D&D lore for almost 40 years and is almost certainly the RPG’s best-known backdrop. It’s also the same locale that was used in Honor Among Thieves.
Both taking place in The Forgotten Realms is where the similarities between the Netflix show and Paramount’s D&D movie begin and end, however. Sources revealed to Deadline that the TV show will not be connected to the movie and that the show, which will be called Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms, will be its own thing.
As for what else we can expect from the adaptation, these are naturally very early stages so other than the fact it exists and news on some of those working on it (Drew Crevello will be its writer and showrunner) we don’t know much. D&D celebrated its 50th anniversary in a variety of ways last year with players first embarking on its fantastical adventures back in 1974. Wizards of the Coast partnered with BlackMilk, Converse, and even Lego to mark the occasion.
