Summary

  • Joyboy, despite being dead for over 800 years, is still the most powerful character in One Piece.
  • Fans speculate that Joyboy was also part of a ‘Monster Trio’ in his crew, similar to the Straw Hats and Roger Pirates.
  • Many believe that Ryuma may have been part of Joyboy’s Monster Trio.

There is a noticeable trend across many Shonen anime series regarding the cyclical nature of the world and the time of previous generations. Though it varies, the general trend deals with ancient times, the previous generation, and the current generation, and One Piece is no exception to this rule. Many powerful characters exist at the current moment, but even stronger ones are said to have existed far back in history.

This is where Joyboy comes in. Despite being dead for over 800 years, he has the greatest Haki feat in all of One Piece, clearly showing that no one else in the world has ever gotten up to his power level. Seeing how he was the first pirate and relating that with the information that fans currently have about the structure of pirate crews, many believe that Joyboy also had a Monster Trio of his own, so let’s look at how this could be true.

Why Joyboy May Have Had A Monster Trio Of His Own

A Common Structure Of Many Pirate Crews

Potential Known Members

Joyboy, Zunesha, Emeth

Potential Unknown Members

Ryuma

The term ‘Monster Trio’ is one that fans have essentially created to refer to Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji as the three strongest members of the Straw Hat pirates who have essentially created a subgroup within the crew for that very purpose. Although Jinbei’s current bounty is higher than Sanji’s, the latter is still largely considered to be the third most vital crewmate, something that is mirrored by Scopper Gaban.

Moreover, these three can also be seen as the ones spearheading the new generation of pirates by being the main members of the most important crew of them all. However, this trio system isn’t unique to the Straw Hats, since many pirate crews all have a similar system of a captain and 2 main underlings who take the roles of second and third in command if something should happen to the captain. The most common example here aside from the Straw Hats are the legendary Roger Pirates, led by Roger, Rayleigh, and Scopper as the ‘Monster Trio’ of their time.

In the old Pirate King’s crew, there were two others who were especially strong, aside from Roger himself!

Another close connection between these 2 specific crews is that each of them is the most important of their time and has a direct relation to the One Piece treasure itself. Because of these thematic connections, many believe that Joyboy must have had a Monster Trio of his own, since so much of his story is shared with the journey of the Roger Pirates and the Straw Hats.

It’s already clear that Joyboy was the first ever pirate, so naturally, he also had a crew, of whom we already have 2 potential members; Zunesha and Emeth. However, it’s unlikely that these two made up the Monster Trio of Joyboy’s time. The most common theory of another potential member is the legendary Sword God of Wano, Shimotsuki Ryuma, who lived centuries before the start of the main story and is said to be the greatest swordsman of all time.

Seeing as how Luffy is essentially the reincarnation of Joyboy in the modern era, something like this would track perfectly for Ryuma since he is the confirmed ancestor of Zoro. Inherited Will is one of the central components of the overall One Piece story, so it’s hard to believe that such connections are mere coincidences, so many do think that some part of the ancient Monster Trio still exists.

However, this does pose a counterpoint, in that there is no mention of a stand-in for Sanji in this group. However, this can easily be mended by the fact that Oda is likely saving all the information about Joyboy’s time for the inevitable flashback that’s going to reveal all the information at once in a way that shows how the Monster Trio, if it existed in this time, would have looked.

Zoro is a fan favorite character who fans have been waiting to see the full story of, but here’s how it could be the most disappointing as well!

Did Joyboy Have A Monster Trio?

What’s The Likelihood Of This?

The only suitable answer to a potential Monster Trio is pure speculation, but it is also something that fans shouldn’t be quick to rule out. The first point going against this has to do with the fact that Ryuma’s exact time is still a matter of debate, with many even stating that the Sword God was active as early as 400 years before the start of the main story.

However, this has never been confirmed. Judging by the structure of some of the most important pirate crews in the entire series, many have come to the conclusion that the ‘leading trio system’ is something that could have very well been the case for Joyboy’s crew as well. Aside from the Straw Hats and Roger Pirates, other notable instances of a major trio system are the Beast Pirates, Marine Admirals, and Whitebeard Pirates, among others.
