Summary

  • Avowed only just launched in its Early Access state on Steam, but it’s off to a strong start.
  • It’s currently the top-selling game in the UK, only being beaten out by the Steam Deck which doesn’t really count.
  • As for reviews, it’s sitting at a “Very Positive” score right now with more than 500 reviews already.

Avowed‘s early access launch appears to be a hit on Steam, as it’s quickly reached “Very Positive” reviews and is the number one top-selling game on the platform right now.

Leading up to Avowed’s launch, it’s fair to say that a lot of players were worried about how it would end up. Ignoring all of the culture war stuff that has plagued the game over the last year, the lack of marketing and release in the middle of an incredibly stacked month made things look a little rocky, even when the initial previews were positive.

Avowed has varied combat and a substantial length, but feels too shallow to sustain itself.

Obsidian fans were mostly able to breathe a big sigh of relief yesterday when the review embargo for Avowed was lifted and revealed that the game was debuting to “Strong” reviews on OpenCritic. That same positive energy has now carried over to the game’s early access launch through its Digital Deluxe Edition.

Avowed Is Off To A Great Start On Steam

Avowed on the Steam top-sellers list.

Although Avowed isn’t available for everyone until next week, those who purchased the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game have already got access to it, and that seems to be quite a lot of players. Over on the Steam top-sellers page, Avowed is currently the top-selling game on the list, only being beaten out by the Steam Deck, which doesn’t really count.

It’s also worth remembering that Avowed will be on Xbox Game Pass, so it selling so much in its early access state suggests a lot of players can’t wait until next week to get it through there.

Avowed isn’t just selling well on Steam, though, as it’s also got some great feedback from those jumping in already. Over on the game’s Steam page, Avowed currently sits at a “Very Positive” review rating thanks to more than 500 reviews that are skewing more positively as of the time of writing.

Steam players are praising Avowed’s combat, Pillars of Eternity setting, performance on PC and Steam Deck, and much more in the positive reviews, with some even putting more than 10 hours into the game already. That being said, while Avowed’s overall review score is positive, it seems that not everyone has fallen in love with it so quickly, just like we noted in the review round-up.

Some players are calling it “lifeless” and too simplistic, which are similar critiques to what TheGamer’s Editor-In-Chief Stacey Henley had to say about it in her review. It seems that Avowed might be a bit of a marmite RPG but, for now at least, the overall consensus seems to be a positive one.
