Command and Conquer, whether it means to be or otherwise, is a frightening satire of modern warfare. Soldiers are treated like objects – mass produced in factories (“unit ready”), they’re sent to die in great, anonymous waves. Red Alert and Tiberian Dawn are meat grinders, but they’re also at a remove, offering macroscopic, top-down POVs on battle. To get in close, you need a smaller-scale RTS like Company of Heroes or maybe XCOM. Or, if you were anywhere near a PC and a browser back in 2008, Warfare 1917 and Warfare 1944. It’s been almost two decades, but the brutal Flash classics are about to return courtesy of a complete remaster.
There’s a horrible simplicity behind the two Warfares. As opposed to other strategy or RTS games, where you have to be clever and careful, in Warfare 1917 and Warfare 1944 it’s more about sheer numbers. The first game, naturally, is set during World War I; the sequel, World War II. But in both cases, your job as commander is to capture fortified enemy positions using brute force.
Spend upgrade points to unlock gas attacks and bombing runs. Time your infantry charges between enemy fusillades. It feels almost like a card or dice game – except it’s loud, chaotic, and the screen is filled with death. Created by Con Artist and published by Flash legend Armor Games Studios, 1917 and 1944 are coming soon to Steam courtesy of Warfare Legacy Collection.

Rebuilt using Unity, Warfare Legacy Collection puts both the war games together in one bundle and enhances them with more-detailed visuals, improved sound, modernized controls, and new balancing changes. Bugs have been fixed and new dialogue has been recorded.
We’re still waiting on the actual release date, but the first demo for Warfare Legacy Collection will go live during Steam Next Fest, which runs between Monday February 24 and Monday March 3, so you’ll be able to try it out properly then. In the meantime, you can add it to your wishlist here.
Otherwise, you might want to try some of the best strategy games, or maybe the best WW2 games on PC.
