The Stone of Madness is a game that hosts one of the last places you’d ever want to be in. While many of them were locked up in hopes of being cured, even those who were once sane gradually lost their minds in this place.

Surviving The Stone of Madness means using every character’s strengths to escape.

The inhumane behavior of the guards and the unimaginable experiments conducted on the inmates make the story even more complex and dark. You take control of five unique inmates, each distinguished by their own set of skills. But which skills are the best?

10

Lockpick

Lockpick is not only one of the best, but also one of the most essential skills in the game. This skill belongs to Leonora, allowing you to bypass all obstacles. These obstacles are usually locked doors that make it difficult to reach objectives in the campaign chapters. With Lockpick, you can open these doors with ease. However, since this is considered a forbidden action, Leonora must not be seen while doing it.

Alternatively, Eduardo can use his Force skill with a crowbar to break open doors. However, unlike Leonora, Eduardo makes a lot of noise with this skill, forcing you to be even more cautious. Additionally, Lockpick can be used to open chests containing valuable items. Keep in mind that using this skill consumes a lockpick.

9

Having Fun

The five inmates you control aren’t superheroes—they each have disorders that can cause sanity loss. Alfredo fears corpses, Eduardo fears the dark, and Leonora fears fire. Avoiding sanity loss is nearly impossible, and losing all sanity leads to new traumas.

Uncover the mystery of the engravings.

Restoring sanity at night is crucial. Leonora’s Evening Recital skill restores sanity for all inmates but risks breaking her violin with repeated use. Amelia’s Having Fun skill restores sanity for herself and one inmate without using resources. If combined with Alfredo’s Planning skill, it can be used twice per night, making it a valuable option for managing sanity effectively.

8

Priest

Since The Stone of Madness is fundamentally a real-time stealth game, you’ll often need to enter forbidden areas to complete objectives. However, these areas are heavily guarded, with watchful guards and other individuals making your task much harder. In these situations, having a skill that keeps you off their radar would be incredibly useful.

Thankfully, Alfredo’s Priest skill allows him to move freely in all forbidden areas without raising alarms. However, to use this skill, you must first find Alfredo’s Priest Robe in the campaign. Be careful—figures like the Mother Superior, Inquisitor, and soldiers will recognize the disguise and raise the alarm. To avoid this, unlocking the Going Unnoticed skill is highly recommended.

7

Volunteer Work

Unfortunately, things won’t always go as planned. While lockpicking a door or searching for an item, you might think you’re safe—only to get caught. When this happens, a chase sequence begins. Regardless of whether you escape or not, your character’s Suspicion level will increase, which is the last thing you want.

While Leonora’s Bribery skill can lower Suspicion, it requires money and only works on one person. A better option is Eduardo’s Volunteer Work skill, which reduces all inmates’ Suspicion by two levels at the cost of two Health. You can then heal him using Alfredo or Agnes, making it an effective way to manage Suspicion.

6

Study

You may be able to read this text with ease now, but literacy rates weren’t always this high in the past, and being able to read was once a luxury. In this 18th-century monastery, only Alfredo and Leonora are literate among the five inmates you control. One skill that sets Alfredo apart from the others is Study. With this skill, Alfredo can consume readable items like books, scrolls, and notes found during the day at night, earning Knowledge.

Unveil the Inquisitor’s dark secrets.

Without this skill, gaining Knowledge would be much slower. With Knowledge, you can teach your characters new skills through Revelations, which enhances their effectiveness. Instead of unlocking all the skills for every character, focus on the most effective ones for your needs, making the game easier for you.

5

Assassinate

It’s not always possible to move stealthily or take action without being noticed by the observing guards. Their positions, numbers, and patrol routes can limit your movements. In this case, the best option is to eliminate the obstacles. You can disable them temporarily, but killing them will make things much easier.

This is where Leonora’s Assassinate skill becomes valuable; the only cost is losing one of Leonora’s Health. Therefore, keeping her at full health is important. After killing a guard, you can visit the Doctor to heal Leonora and continue your work. Keep in mind that armed soldiers cannot be killed with Assassinate, so teaching Leonora the Gunshot skill is useful. Also, hiding the bodies of the dead will be beneficial.

4

Evil Eye

Among the five inmates you control, Agnes might be the strangest and perhaps the most terrifying. This elderly woman is not your typical sweet, old lady. With her knowledge of dark magic, she is, in fact, one of your most dangerous weapons. Agnes knows three spells at the beginning of the game, and arguably the best one is Evil Eye among them. If you’re not using it, you should definitely start.

With this skill, anyone running toward you or moving to alert others will collapse and pass out. One of the best things about this skill is that, unlike Leonora’s Knockout, it doesn’t consume any resources—it only reduces Agnes’s sanity. However, thanks to her Witch’s Amulet, Agnes’s sanity won’t drop below 30, making this skill extremely valuable.

3

Goetia

If you’ve gathered enough Knowledge, you can teach Agnes one of the best skills in the game, Goetia. Among the deadly skills, Goetia is definitely the most powerful. The reason for this is that no matter who Agnes uses the spell on (except for key characters like the Mother Superior), it completely vanishes them—leaving no body behind.

Every chicken brings you closer to freedom.

This means you don’t have to worry about hiding the body, unlike with skills like Assassinate. When used at the right time and place, this skill can save your life. However, both Agnes and her target need to be in the dark for it to work. Keep in mind that this skill costs 30 sanity, so make sure Agnes’s sanity stays above 90 to eliminate three targets.

2

Crafting

Of course, not every skill works during the day; some are only effective at night. Among these skills, one of the best is Eduardo’s Crafting skill. Without it, you could find yourself in a very difficult situation, possibly even having to sell everything just to keep buying items from Panecillo.

Thanks to Eduardo, you can repair broken items for your other inmates and craft the materials needed for them to use their skills. Additionally, if you want to craft more, you can unlock his Expert Craftsman skill. However, even without unlocking it, this skill is essential in its core form. Eduardo may not have the ability to speak, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve endless gratitude.

1

Investigate

One of the most frequently used and essential skills is Investigate. Sometimes, it may even be impossible to complete the objectives of a chapter without using it. If you spot golden sparkling footprints anywhere, stop whatever you’re doing and follow the tracks with Alfredo. As a result, you may find something that helps you complete the objective or valuable materials.

The best thing about Investigate is that, as long as you haven’t entered a restricted area, it won’t draw anyone’s attention. Additionally, you need a light source for Investigate, so using the Oil Lamp that Alfredo has will make your job much easier.
