Struggling Hyper Light Breaker reveals impressive roadmap packed with updates

Hyper Light Breaker has had a rocky start after entering Steam Early Access last month, but developer Heart Machine has announced an ongoing roadmap of updates, new content, and fixes for the spring season, starting next week.

Although the roguelike is still in early access, it’s safe to say Hyper Light Breaker hasn’t been all that its predecessor, 2016’s Hyper Light Drifter, managed to be. The original was a ground-breaking RPG classic that garnered an extraordinarily large fanbase, leading to increased expectations around its sequel that haven’t as of yet been met. Fans clamoured to get their hands on Hyper Light Breaker when it dropped, but this is where the momentum has waned

Heart Machine’s latest offering currently has a ‘mixed’ rating on Steam with a mere 58% positive reviews. Reports of bugs and crashes, as well as issues with the move away from Hyper Light Drifter’s playstyle all caused the devs to promise that players can “expect better” in the future.

This new roadmap, titled the Spring Edition, lays out a number of these fixes and improvements, as well as bonus additions to the game. February’s update will introduce a new player character, Ravona, a Breaker first shown in the gameplay reveal trailer in 2024 who has since been the object of fans’ affections and countless requests for her to appear in the game.

Players will get access to new Holobytes, enemies, and affixes, alongside combat and gear rebalancing in February’s update. There will also be a focus on performance updates and bug fixes, although no specifics have yet been shared.

March’s update will feature new enemies, assassins, Holobytes, blades, and affixes, as well as more rebalancing and general enhancements. By April, the studio has promised a full content update in the form of the Buried Below Update.

In the official announcement, Heart Machine stated that “As an Early Access game, Hyper Light Breaker will continue to grow and evolve with the power of player feedback as the Heart Machine team responds to suggestions from the community with regular updates and new content throughout the Early Access period.

“In the first two weeks following Early Access, player feedback brought about major hotfixes that made performance optimization improvements, expanded control and graphics options, critical bug fixes, a rework of enemy aggro and major quality of life improvements, including a rework of the Medkit system which now allows players to start with a Medkit. This roadmap, and the roadmaps to come, are reflections of the team’s dedication to providing players with an exciting and memorable gameplay experience in the lead up to the game’s 1.0 launch.”

The first update in Hyper Light Breaker’s roadmap is due on Tuesday 18 February 2025.
