Summary

  • PS5 sold 9.5 million units from October to December 2024, a year-on-year uptick of 1.3 million units.
  • Total PS5 sales have now surpassed 75 million, with the PlayStation division accruing 37% more profit year-on-year.
  • Monthly active users across PlayStation services also grew 5% year-on-year, and Sony expects 2% more profit for the entirety of FY2024.

Sony has reported record PlayStation 5 sales for the period of October to December 2024. The encouraging sales update for the PS5 comes alongside an increase in monthly active users and overall revenue for Sony’s gaming division.

Ever since its launch in 2020, the PS5 has comfortably taken the lead in terms of sales figures compared to its closest rival, the Xbox Series X/S. The current-generation system has more or less matched the PS4’s sales pace so far, and Sony even announced last year that the PS5 has accrued more profit for the company than every prior console generation. Now, Sony has announced PS5 sales data for holiday 2024, and it looks quite impressive.

Days Gone Remastered Coming to PS5 With New Content

Sony finally confirms the existence of the long-rumored Days Gone remaster, which is coming later this year with extra content.

During its recent Q3 FY2024 earnings call, Sony revealed that the PS5 sold 9.5 million units in the three months between October 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. This marks a year-on-year increase of 1.3 million units and a record quarter performance for the PS5 generation. Lifetime PS5 sales have now surpassed 75 million, and on a launch-aligned basis, the current-gen machine is only 1.5 million units behind the PS4. As mentioned above, though, Sony is raking in much more profit from the PS5. It’s also worth noting that Sony is bundling PS5 and PS5 Pro sales numbers in the aforementioned data.

PS5 Holiday 2024 Official Sales Figures

  • PS5 consoles sold during Q3 FY24: 9.5 million
  • Updated lifetime PS5 sales numbers: 75 million

Therefore, it’s difficult to ascertain how well the $700 PS5 Pro is faring commercially. Convoluted sales split aside, Sony says that PS5 shipments are in line with the company’s running target of 18 million consoles sold by the end of March 2025. Monthly active users across PlayStation services were also up 5% year-on-year at 129 million, and Sony’s gaming business saw a 37% spike in profit compared to the same period in 2023. Rather astonishingly, PlayStation grossed $30.8 billion in revenue from January to December 2024, slightly outpacing the combined revenues of Xbox and Nintendo for the calendar year.

Despite recent stumbles like the cancelation of two PlayStation live-service games, financial outlooks for the gaming giant seem to be very positive. In light of the record-breaking commercial performance, Sony has raised its profit forecast for the PlayStation division by 2% for the entirety of FY2024. The upcoming fiscal year is shaping up to be even more profitable for PlayStation thanks to high-profile releases like Grand Theft Auto 6, Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and more.
