New Lies of P DLC acts as a chilling prequel to the brilliant soulslike

While its soulslike combat is instantly recognizable to fans of FromSoftware’s incredible RPGs, Lies of P manages to stand out as one of the most unique games to take inspiration from the Souls series. Sure, it too is fairly dark and bleak, but it uses that aesthetic to transform old fairy tales into something brutal and brilliant. If you’re a soulslike fan, it’s definitely worth your time, and if you’ve already played it, you’ll no doubt be excited for its upcoming DLC. Well, in today’s State of Play, Lies of P made a surprise appearance, showing off footage of its first expansion for the first time and revealing that it’ll be a prequel to the base game’s story.

I’ve got a lot of time for Lies of P, and Lauren also had plenty of good things to say about it when she penned her Lies of P review back in 2023. Finding a really good balance between FromSoft familiarity and innovation, this dark reimagining of the story of Pinocchio remains one of the best soulslike games of the decade so far. While not quite on the same level as Elden Ring, it’s more than deserving of a new expansion, and that’s exactly what you’ll be getting later this year.

We’ve known that a Lies of P DLC has been in the works for a while, but today is the first time we’ve seen gameplay, learned about its premise, and heard its name: Overture. This expansion is going to take things back to before the events of the main game, and focus in on the Puppet Frenzy – a dark moment in the history of the city of Krat, whereby the puppet servants turned on their masters and massacred them.

“You will venture back in time to experience the harrowing journey that birthed that fateful moment,” says game director Jiwon Choi. “Through Lies of P: Overture, we aimed to fully refine, forge and complete the story as we originally envisioned it.”

Lies of P Overture will be released in summer 2025, according to Choi. This seems like a real treat for fans of the game that will answer some burning questions about Krat’s past and, judging by Choi’s language, be the final chapter for Lies of P given that a sequel is currently in development.
