Killing Floor 3 is seeking to give players more options than ever when it comes to customizing their weapons while waging war against the Zeds. Tripwire Interactive has been hard at work ensuring that each gun is gratifying to shoot, making the gameplay loop in Killing Floor 3 as addictive as possible.
The world of Killing Floor 3 has evolved, as the sequel takes place in 2091, nearly 70 years after the events of Killing Floor 2. Zeds have become even more dangerous, but so have the survivors. In the upcoming first-person action/horror shooter, players have plenty of weapons to protect themselves, but in a franchise first, players can do a bit more with the weaponry. Game Rant recently spoke with KF3 lead combat designer Bill Munk about the inclusion of weapon mods and customization.

For Call of Duty Zombies fans desperate for another game that can scratch the same itch, Tripwire Interactive’s Killing Floor 2 is worth a look.
How Tripwire Interactive Is Approaching Weapon Modifications and Customization in Killing Floor 3
Building and Customizing Your Weapon
Munk told Game Rant that players will be able to fully customize their weapon loadouts with names, unique skins, and even trinkets. Munk gave the example of having a shrunken Clot head hanging off of a gun in Killing Floor 3, which may appeal to many fans. More importantly, players will have the opportunity to customize a gun’s function through modifications. As he explained,
“We wanted people to feel like they could personalize a weapon and have it be their weapon. Any weapon you’re using, you’ll start acquiring schematics from killing the Zeds. You also have spy cameras, different terminals and stuff, to get components, and you use them to build the mods. We have over 180 different mods that you can put on weapons, and it changes the nature of the weapon, its power, and how it functions. You can really customize it to how you want to play.”
When discussing customization, Munk said that mods have a price, which means players in Killing Floor 3 may want to consider the weapon’s cost when starting a game. If a player wants to acquire a good early-wave weapon, they’ll need to consider how much money they’re given at the beginning of an operation and plan accordingly. However, as players level up, their operational budget will increase, allowing them to secure better and better guns from the start.
Acquiring the Perfect Stats
When discussing weapon modifications, Munk clarified that there’s more to them than meets the eye. After acquiring the ability to make a weapon modification, players will want to level up the mod in addition to leveling up their specialist. This will help survivors defend themselves against hordes of Zeds in Killing Floor 3. As he explained,
“Another element that I think fans are going to enjoy is that, with every mod, you can make it once you have the schematic. You can level that up three times, you need resources from playing to do that, and when you hit the highest level of that mod, a special stat becomes active. We’ve made a whole bunch of them, and it’s random which stat applies onto that mod. If you don’t like it, you can recycle, but it’s like a min-maxer’s dream with the mods.”
Munk also went on to say that the team has developed so many mods that they haven’t even had time to thoroughly play all of them. He fully expects that gamers are going to find their own unique combinations, and many of those may have unexpected consequences. Given that the higher levels of difficulty in Killing Floor 3 are meant to be stressful, players will likely need to think outside the box in order to survive.
