Gege dropped the ball with Gojo’s character. His character had a lot more potential in JJK.

One of the most beloved characters in JJK, who, thankfully, managed to survive and got a happy ending of sorts was Maki. Fans know that Maki had quite a hard life ahead of her and that her story was one filled with pain and grief, but in the end, she conquered all the obstacles in her path and became a fearsome sorcerer few can rival. Maki’s growth was phenomenal to watch, and although fans definitely wanted more from her character ending, it was somewhat satisfying, to say the least.

  • Maki Likely Surpassed Toji

Maki was quite easily one of the strongest characters in JJK, and in its last arc, she was undoubtedly one of the mightiest. That said, she wasn’t always phenomenal in terms of combat. Maki started off her journey as a rather weak character, and this was simply down to the fact that she had little cursed energy. Maki couldn’t even see curses and that was chalked down to the curse of being twins. With Maki was her sister, Mai. Whereas Maki had great physical prowess and little cursed energy, her sister was the complete opposite. She certainly had cursed energy, but she was quite average in combat.

Maki was, naturally, cast aside by many and treated very differently within the Zenin family. Even when she started out to be a sorcerer, Maki found it quite difficult to advance in the ranks due to the influence of her family. However, the family that Maki clearly wanted to acknowledge her was the same one that met their end at her hands. Once Maki and Mai were forced to go through pain by the cruel Zenin family once again, it was time for the tables to turn. Mai sacrificed herself for her sister, and this allowed Maki to fully tap into her true potential. With Mai’s death, Maki was rid of all the Cursed Energy that she had left and broke free from the curse forever, just like Toji. Maki also grew dramatically in terms of strength. Whereas she once lost against Ogi Zeni, she went on to slaughter him in combat, and with him, the rest of the Zenin Clan as well. Maki broke free and leveled up in terms of strength greatly, setting the way for her to become even more important in the Culling Game, and later down the line, the Shinjuku Showdown arc of JJK.

Maki In The Shinjuku Showdown Arc

Maki Fought Against Sukuna Phenomenally

If there is one thing that fans knew would come as the story continued, it was Maki’s battle against Ryomen Sukuna. Of course, Maki was never going to be the main opponent for Sukuna, but given that she was easily one of the strongest sorcerers, it made sense for Maki to be involved in the battle in some shape or form. When Sukuna took control of Megumi’s body, it was clear for the fans to see that he would clash with Maki. The two did engage momentarily in some exciting battle, and it pushed Sukuna to bring out more of his power.

If I had stayed there at the bottom I would’ve hated myself. — Maki

But, Maki’s true involvement against Sukuna came later down the line, when Shinjuku Showdown was underway. After Gojo’s death, every major sorcerer joined in on the battle almost immediately, and it marked the beginning of a massive battle. Maki didn’t jump in right away, but she was waiting on the sidelines for the signal from Yuta for her turn to strike. Once Maki got the signal, following Yuta being cut down in two, she immediately rushed into battle and with her Split Soul Katana, managed to damage Sukuna greatly in battle.

Sukuna was stabbed right through the heart, thanks to Maki, and given that the Split Soul Katana dealt soul damage, it wasn’t easy for the King of Curses to deal with it.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Nobara’s Ending, Explained

Nobara’s ending was very underwhelming. Her character had a lot more potential in JJK.

Maki even engaged in hand-to-hand combat with Sukuna, and as far as pure physical strength goes, she trumped him quite easily. She was the greater physical monster, but Sukuna’s cursed energy usage showed that he could keep up and overpower her without too much trouble. Sukuna even managed to land powerful Black Flashes on Maki. She was hit with two mighty black flashes, and she managed to tank them all. This is, once again, an indication of the fact that Maki was a worthy opponent for Sukuna. Thanks to Kasumi Miwa, she was even able to take the 99-second domain from Sukuna, but thanks to Aoi Todo, she was swapped out of the battle before Divine Flames struck.

Maki And Yuta Ended Up Together

Many Years Later, Maki Had Grandchildren

Combat-wise, fans didn’t see anything from Maki after she was taken out of the range of Sukuna’s domain by Aoi Todo. However, there was still a lot left for her character to gain. In JJK’s epilogue, it was made clear to the fans that Maki had ended up with Yuta Okkotsu. It is unknown how and when they got together, but what is clear is that Yuta has two grandchildren right now. Both of them resemble Yuta and Maki. While the girl looks more like Yuta, the boy looks like the exact copy of Megumi and Maki, given that he carries the genes of the Zenin.

It is also clear that Yuta was made the acting head of the Gojo Clan at some point, and this meant they Yuta and Maki likely lived in the facilities of the Gojo Clan. Unfortunately, fans didn’t get to see either of them in the epilogue, but they can only hope that Gege gives them yet another glimpse of the beloved character once he’s well-rested. Be it in a movie, or a oneshot chapter, fans absolutely cannot wait to see how Maki developed after the end of the war, and what her character truly ended up like years after graduating from Tokyo Jujutsu High. Her popularity remains incredibly high to this day, and that’s a testament to the brilliant woman that Gege Akutami created in Maki.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s last chapter, JJK 271, was finally released on September 29, 2024. Fans can read the series on the Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump apps.
