As someone that’s based in Glasgow, Scotland, I genuinely believe that dreary, almost moody weather can bring out the best in a landscape. My former university, for example, looks beautiful in the sunshine, but takes on a somewhat Bloodborne-y feel when the skies are gray. Murkiness maketh the mood (said someone, maybe), and Tides of Annihilation is all about gloom. Set in a modern-day London that’s been destroyed by a mysterious calamity, you’re thrust into the shoes of Gwendolyn, the city’s sole survivor and newfound leader of the Arthurian Knights of the Round Table, and sent on a universe-spanning adventure unlike any I’ve ever seen.

“I will take back everything that belongs to me, even if the price is my soul,” says Tides of Annihilation‘s protagonist, who sounds ominously like God’s favorite princess and the bestest girl in the world (aka Baldur’s Gate 3’s Shadowheart). From the moment we set eyes on her, her intentions are clear: she wants revenge, and it had best be served cold.

Chasing down her lost sister, Gwendolyn straddles two worlds: an apocalyptic, smog-ridden London, and the fantastical realm of Avalon. In the trailer below we see a broken Big Ben tangled up in eerie black vines, then a toppled London Eye lying on its side, eerily reminiscent of the one we see in the remains of Pripyat Amusement Park. From the onset it’s clear that this is a dark fantasy RPG that isn’t going to pull its punches.

There’s a little bit of everything in Tides of Annihilation. There’s some platforming, Assassin’s Creed-style parkour, and boss fights reminiscent of Elden Ring or Bloodborne. Gwendolyn can also summon the Knights of the Round Table to fight at her side, each with their own unique skillset that can easily turn the tide of battle.

Eclipse Glow Games has confirmed that there are over 30 bosses in Tides of Annihilation, and we see everything from twisted knights in shining armor to spell-slinging sorceresses and hulking rocky colossi. Avalon certainly feels like it’s heavily inspired by The Lands Between, while London’s bosses take its iconic architecture and warp it into creatures that will genuinely haunt your nightmares. Both worlds are absolutely breathtaking, however, and I can’t wait to learn more.

While there’s no official release date for Tides of Annihilation, Eclipse Glow Games has confirmed that “extended gameplay footage” will be released on Thursday February 13. Hopefully this will give us a bit more insight into what to expect, but honestly, I just want to see more its absolutely gorgeous world.

In the meantime, we have a list of all the best soulslike games if you’re looking for a challenge. Or, alternatively, if you’re a big fan of Jennifer English, here’s a list of Baldur’s Gate 3 mods to shake up your next playthrough.
