The remastered version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles has been unexpectedly shut down on iOS devices by publisher Square Enix due to a persistent bug. Players have been running into progression issues in Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles on their mobile devices, and in response, leadership at Square Enix has decided to simply end support for the classic action RPG on the iOS platform.
Originally launched in Japan for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003 and making its debut in other parts of the world in 2004, the game sees parties made up of series-regular Final Fantasy races and character classes journeying around a fantasy realm in a caravan and protecting settlements from a destructive miasma that envelops the world. A remastered version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was released in August 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and mobile devices.

A new rumor indicates that the eagerly awaited remake of Square Enix’s PS1 classic Final Fantasy 9 may not launch in 2025.
A recent statement from Square Enix has revealed that a large number of players using iOS devices have been unable to access content that they’ve paid for in the mobile game, including those who paid for the full version, due to a bug that surfaced when the developers changed the in-app purchase model. Developers have been unable to fix the bug completely, and Square Enix has decided to end service for it on iOS beginning on February 13, noting that the game is unlikely to return to the mobile platform. It’s an unfortunate end to a more than four-year run that got off to a rocky start, as Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles‘ remaster suffered major multiplayer issues from its early days, earning the dissatisfaction of a lot of long-time fans.

Those looking to play Crystal Chronicles elsewhere still have other options. The Android version of the game is still listed on the Google Play Store, although many customers won’t be able to purchase it, as it was built to be played on older phone models. However, the game is still available for $29.99 on both the Nintendo eShop and the PlayStation Store, making the Switch and PS4 versions still accessible. Additionally, in comments made in 2023, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles‘ producer said he wanted a new game to be made that would be a spin-off from the mainline Final Fantasy series, much like Crystal Chronicles was, so there is a possibility of a sequel in the future.
