The February 12, 2025, PlayStation State of Play included the first ever story reveal trailer for Supermassive Games’ upcoming sci-fi horror game Directive 8020, which will kick off Season 2 of The Dark Pictures Anthology. Directive 8020 was originally teased during a mid-credits roll in The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me, and players have now been given a sneak peek into the next horrifying story from Supermassive.
Following the success of the hit horror game Until Dawn, Supermassive Games began releasing smaller titles under the branding of The Dark Pictures Anthology. These independent stories feature similar gameplay elements, like the key choice-based storytelling introduced in Until Dawn, but differ greatly in the types of horror they showcase. Supermassive has said that it intends for The Dark Pictures Anthology to consist of eight games in total, and with Season 1 ending after a fourth release, players can get a first look at how Directive 8020 will bring new terrors to the second half of the anthology’s releases.

The game will take place on a massive spaceship, The Cassiopeia, as players lead a crew of astronauts on a deadly mission to save humanity while battling against an alien lifeform. Similar to John Carpenter’s The Thing, Directive 8020‘s extraterrestrial creature has the ability to replicate the DNA of humans and can reform itself to create a cloned mimic. Players will need to use their wits to determine friend from foe and decide who can and cannot be trusted among the crew. Directive 8020 is scheduled to launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 2, 2025.

Fans can get a glimpse of the alien’s transformation mimicry, which will be the first introduction of body horror in The Dark Pictures Anthology series. Directive 8020 looks to combine the terrors of The Thing with the atmosphere of Ridley Scott’s Alien, offering horror fans a true sci-fi experience to look forward to.
