How To Unlock And Use Mementos

Mementos are a new introduction to Civilization 7. These are powerful meta progression unlocks that add a lot to your game, whether that be extra attribute points to spend at the start of the game, to civilization or leader-friendly bonuses that compliment certain victory conditions. Mementos are unlocked by completing the Foundation Path, which is a sort of internal, free battle-pass for Civilization 7, and for leveling up your leaders by completing challenges.

Unlocking Mementos takes a long time, especially if you want to reach level 9 Mementos for each leader.

How To Unlock And Use Mementos

Mementos are unlocked by completing challenges in Civilization 7. This might be something like winning the game on Immortal difficulty, but you will also receive experience towards Mementos via other challenges, like building certain wonders, playing specific leaders, and much more.

You’ll start to unlock Mementos immediately, although the first set is just attribute Mementos. These allow you to start the game with an extra attribute point in a tree of your choosing.

These attribute point Mementos are actually quite powerful, as some of the later attribute tree unlocks are fantastic.

Leader-specific Mementos are unlocked by playing with your favorite leaders. The Mementos are usually linked to that leader’s playstyle. For example, Ibn Battuta receives a great early Memento that increases Scout vision by +1, which is directly linked to his already-existing leader bonus of +1 sight for all units.

However, you can also mix and match your Mementos with other leaders. This can lead to some fun (and broken) combinations, and we expect it’s via this Memento system that we will see some of the more bizarre Civilization 7 games in the future.

How To Use Mementos

Mementos can be slotted when you first start a game of Civilization. You can use two Mementos at the same time, so choose wisely.

You can change your Mementos between Ages. This will allow you to shift focus or get extra benefits from other Mementos during the Exploration or Modern Age.

We often miss this or even just forget about this feature – it’s a pretty small button located right at the bottom of the screen!

Mementos can also be used in multiplayer and can be selected when you’re in the lobby. It’s also possible to ban the use of Mementos, and it’s likely this will be pretty common, because of the aforementioned broken combinations you can pull off with them.
