Avowed Review Round-Up

The reviews for Avowed have just gone live and they seem to be mostly positive so far, with the game opening to a “Strong” score on OpenCritic.

2025 is shaping up to be a massive year for video games in general, but it’s looking like an especially stacked time for Xbox, who finally has a big suite of first-party (well, as first-party as Xbox gets nowadays) games under its belt. Just a few of the big releases that it has planned this year include South of Midnight, Fable, Doom: The Dark Ages, and more.

Avowed has varied combat and a substantial length, but feels too shallow to sustain itself.

Kicking off Xbox’s long-awaited big year is none other than Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed, which was revealed all the way back in 2020 during Xbox’s Summer showcase. Avowed has gone through a lot of changes since then, but it’s finally launching next week on February 18. Before that, though, reviews for the game have just gone live.

Avowed Is Getting Mostly Positive Reviews

Avowed's opening reviews on OpenCritic.

So far, it seems that Avowed is kicking off with some mostly positive reviews, as it currently sits at a “Strong” 83 rating overall on OpenCritic and an 80 on Metacritic. Most of the reviews seem to skew towards an eight out of ten, although there are a few that swing higher or lower and have moved the needle a bit.

Let’s start off with TheGamer’s review of Avowed, which comes from our Editor-In-Chief Stacey Henley. Stacey wasn’t as fond of Avowed as most seem to be and gave it a 3/5, noting that the game feels shallow and “unfinished”, but with entertaining combat that strikes a good balance between guns, swords, and magic.

On the other hand, Screen Rant went a bit higher with Avowed and awarded it a 4.5/5 due to its character writing, exploration, and world. Screen Rant wasn’t as hot on the combat, though, which indicates that it’s very much up to taste. VGC went with a 4/5 for Avowed, noting that it’s combat, dialogue, and world are great, but that there are some annoyances like the inability to mop up side quests.

Elsewhere, VG24/7 went with a perfect score for Avowed, noting that it’s “not a trailblazer” but does everything that it sets out to do with style. One of the more negative reviews for Avowed comes from Radio Times, who said that some of the game’s elements are brilliant, but that others left the reviewer out in the cold.
