Constantine is a supernatural action-horror movie loosely based on DC Comics’ Hellblazer series. It featured Reeves in the titular role, John Constantine. The film was released in 2005 and had moderate box-office success. It also received mixed reactions from fans, with some saying it deviated from the comics. However, the reception has become much more positive over time, and the film has gained a cult following, with many loving its dark atmosphere, visuals, and Reeve’s impressive performance. The excitement for the anticipated Constantine 2 will not come to naught as it is happening.

Keanu Reeves Gives Major Update About Constantine 2
Keanu Reeves is just waiting for a script for Constantine 2.
Francis Lawrence, who directed Constantine and would be helming the upcoming sequel, Constantine 2, spoke with Collider recently about the film. He teased that they were making progress. “I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing,” Lawrence said. He also shared that his co-producer Akiva Goldsman and Reeves, who is set to return to reprise the lead role, were thrilled about doing the project. “And Akiva, Keanu and I are super, super excited about it,” Lawrence added.
The sequel had been stuck in limbo for nearly two decades, but they were finally making progress regarding the narrative. According to Lawrence, they read through the comics released in the past 20 years. “We have a great idea. We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things,” he explained. “I will say that there’s probably grains from things that we’re pulling, but in truth, most of it is just coming from the three of us, you know, loving the character, loving the world, having it sort of in the back of our minds for 20 years and just kind of percolating on ideas, and stories and characters we love, and ideas we love.” Last year, Reeves shared a significant update about Constantine 2 when he appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. They revisited their 2021 interview where the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 actor admitted that he had been pursuing the producers to work on a Constantine sequel, but they turned him down. However, after that, they eventually agreed to do it. Reeves confirmed the project had been greenlit, saying:
The no’s started to become a maybe, which became a kinda yes, which became maybe hire a writer and pay a writer, and right now, waiting on a script.
Reeves has always shown his willingness to play John Constantine again. He has said it multiple times, even declaring that Constantine is among his favorite roles. It’s good that Reeves is getting what he has always wanted because many are also looking forward to watching the sequel. There are numerous unfinished storylines from the first film, such as Constantine’s deal with Lucifer and the conflict between angels and demons. Also, many are interested in knowing what happened to angel Gabriel after he was stripped of his angelic power. Gabriel was last seen in a hospital, warning Constantine they could still die like mortals. These are only a few elements left unexplored and many fans await answers. So, hopefully, the next update will be when the production starts and a release date.
