Summary
- Walkers are slow, making it easy to run from, but can pose a threat in large hordes.
- Vehicles require gas and upkeep, prompting fans to question why bicycles weren’t used.
- Fans suggest bicycles as a practical, silent, and efficient mode of transport for survivors.
AMC’s The Walking Dead wouldn’t be the iconic show it is without its bloodthirsty, bone-munching living dead that seemed to show up at the most inconvenient of times. Thankfully, unlike the zombies in The Last of Us, walkers are fairly slow and aren’t really designed to run for extended periods, which makes them a slow-moving threat. Running away from them usually does the trick, unless there’s a huge intimidating horde close by, but generally speaking, survivors from the iconic series quickly became apt at avoiding them.
Another way Rick and the group got from A to B to try and avoid walkers was the many vehicles found within the post-apocalyptic world. Although they were great for large supply runs and getting bigger groups (mostly) safely from one camp to another, vehicles like cars, trucks, RVs, and motorcycles required a much-needed ingredient and that was gas, something that was in short supply. The other issue was maintenance, as vehicles took a lot of upkeep and that’s something the show’s characters didn’t especially have time for. However, fans of The Walking Dead have pointed out an obvious and much easier mode of transport that seemed to be amiss in later seasons of the series.

Walking Dead Fans Confused About Why Show’s Characters Didn’t Use Bicycles More
On Reddit, a fan of the series brought up an interesting and valid point regarding transport in The Walking Dead. Apart from when Rick gets out of the hospital in TWD‘s pilot episode and is seen cycling away from a walker in his medical gown, and when Eugene and crew use them when they meet Princess, bicycles are rarely used at all. It seems like a simple and hassle-free mode of transportation that the series just didn’t hone in on, for whatever reason. Not only do they not require gas, they are easily fixed if broken and quiet, but they are also easy to maneuver around things like blockages, unlike RVs and cars.
“Realistically, it is one of the best types of transportation and should have been used more” replied one user in the comment section, while another stated that bicycles are “much easier than having horses that you need to feed, who could be scared by walkers, make noise, etc. They should use bikes a lot more. Very practical for carrying stuff and infants.” While using horses in The Walking Dead enhances the storytelling by addressing practical survival skills and, heck, it looks cooler after all, many fans think that the use of more bicycles would have been an amazing addition and something that might have saved a few lives in the process.
For those who remember the poor hitchhiker in season 3 of The Walking Dead who succumbed to zombies because Rick wouldn’t stop the car, he too may have benefited from the use of a bike instead of relying on the apparent lack of goodwill from others and maybe even escaped getting munched on. Maybe The Walking Dead creators will implement more of this uncomplicated mode of transport in their next spin-off series.
As for now, fans can catch The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 in the spring and Daryl Dixon Season 3 sometime this year.
