Of course, prioritizing all the side quests to the main missions could distract player from the main story and detach them from the main campaign’s ryhthm, but some of the side quests in Rebirth are just too good to be ignored.

Missing: Mr. Birdie

Helping cute animals is just an undetectable part of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, and there are a couple different side quests with a similar theme, from rescuing lovely kittens to bringing home Mr. Birdie, also known as Cloud Jr.

This side quest is about finding Cloud Jr by setting some traps for him in the region of Corel. It might take a bit of grinding to craft the traps, but this whole mission feels different and games a fun gameplay experience with some heavy action, of course. It’s like a minimal Monster Hunter experience in Final Fantasy.

In the original game, there was a mini-game within Gold Saucer called Mog House. It was one of the easiest ways to get money within Gold Saucer early on. The Moogle Intel quests in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth pay homage to that idea while expanding the mini-game to involve Cloud chasing around a bunch of Moogles.

Every region has one of these quests and if players complete them all they will be treated to one of the funniest scenes in the game. Cloud gets turned into a Moogle and it is too precious for words.

At first glance, Absence of a Sign is more like a simple quest that may even sound boring to some players, as Cloud and Aerith are tasked to fight some ill omens and then capture the celestial phenomena happening in the sky afterward. But, the quest does come with a secret trigger that Aerith fans would never want to miss!

If Cloud manages to take a sneaky photograph of Aerith while she is praying, it will trigger a secret scene in the quest between Cloud and Aerith, and will also reward the player with additional items at the end of the quest. Despite featuring some combat, Absence of a Sign has an amazing and wholesome conclusion.

Another reoccurring quest tasks Cloud with trying to find Protorelics for Chadley. This will eventually lead to unlocking an optional boss fight with Gilgamesh. Unlike the Moogle quests, all of the Protorelic quests are unique.

For example, the Junon region one, which starts with Phenomenon Intel 1: The World of Fort Condor, will suck Barret, Tifa, and Cloud into a game of Fort Condor in full PS1-like polygonal glory. The graphical change alone makes this Fort Condor quest worthwhile in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth but it’s also funny.

Calling All Frogs is another quest that turns Cloud into a bizarre creature. In the underbelly of Junon, there is a pit where kids play that turns them into frogs. They play a mini-game there simply called Jumpfrog.

This next quest skips ahead a few regions into the Cosmo Canyon territory. Even though it is a side quest, it should be required because it answers a lot of questions. While looking for more Protorelics, the gang comes across Nayo, Polk, and Billy Bob who were characters in Yuffie’s DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

They are trying to reawaken generators to heal the planet but they are covered by monsters which is where players step in to play a mini-game called Gears and Gambits. During this mission, Nayo also reveals that Wedge is indeed dead as they saw him fall off a building and the flashback they show is quite brutal in Phenomenon Intel 1: Avalanche HQ.

Gilgamesh and Sephiroth in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

After the flashback wherein Cloud tells the group about his relationship with Sephiroth, players will meet a new character in the morning named Broden. He’s the innkeeper in Kalm and besides one extra mission, he will disappear from the story almost completely.

That is until the Protorelic quest in Nibel can begin with Phenomenon Intel 1: Testing the Waters. During these four missions, players will see Broden is now one of the robed figures murmuring about Sephiroth, Jenova, and reunions. Along with Roche, it seems a little mean to turn Broden into a mindless husk.

Another great quest around the Nibel region can be completed once the story stuff wraps up in Chapter 11. Players will meet a singing cook in the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth quest, My White-Haired Angel. She lost her cat and desperately wanted it back, so she asked Cloud and Tifa to help.

There is one last quest in the Nibel region that players should complete. Once players get control of the Tiny Bronco and can fast travel around freely, they should return to Nibelheim. If players go into the Shinra Mansion they can learn more about Vincent and his past.

While he still doesn’t join the fight, he will follow players as they rush through challenges at Hojo’s request. It’s nice Vincent gets something expanded upon with this quest, Lament of the Damned, especially since Cid doesn’t get a quest tied to his past.

Beneath Still Waters

Beneath Still Waters is the final worthwhile quest which can be completed in the second to last chapter. If players go back to Junon, they can begin with what sounds like a basic monster hunt. When players make it to their destination, they will find members of Midgar’s Seventh Infantry on the hunt for the beast, Hell Rider 2.

It’s made clear that the commander knows Cloud is not part of this squad but thanks him anyway. He’s an honorary member at best and maybe this goofy squad of soldiers will return in the final part of this trilogy.
